Also, remember people, you can take any game, remove the points/restrictions and play it just like AOS... It would probably be more enjoyable too.

But it wouldn't be a game made by GW, so it's irrelevant.

Joke aside, this is indeed the truth. You could as well replace all the rules by "I roll a dice; 1-3 I fail, 4-6 I succeed". It would still be a game and you would still be using your models.

We are just playing with plastic soldiers, after all. We just need a few "adult rules" so that we feel like playing something more "elaborate" than chid's play. Or not. It doesn't really matter.

This is our passion, so it's natural to defend it.

That is how we describe it to those who ask us about what Wargaming is.
"It is like when we used to play in the dirt and argued about who got killed with the Bazooka Guy, but now we added a Rolling Dice and Arguing Phase."

I am a Furry that plays with little Toy Soldiers; if you are taking me too seriously I am not the only one with Issues.

I don't think GW has any desire to grow up, and frankly it would be a big mistake for them to do so. The market for more complicated rules is much smaller and is already very well served by many rival companies with a lot more experience in historicals and so on.

That said, I think GW could easily put more interest into AoS and 40K simply by jinking around with the IGOUGO turn sequence, without making things too complicated.

I wouldn't say that Flames of War is all that much more complicated. Frankly GW was the "complicated mess of rules with maul sized rule book" company until AoS came out. It's not about the complexity of the rules but how well they enable the play on the table. Kings of War is in no way a complicated ruleset but the actual play on the table is great. The rules help frame things but otherwise stay out of the way. Same with Flames and AoS. With 40K and WFB 7th/8th I felt that the rules were getting in the way of the play. Sort of like a crappy referee who makes the match all about himself and is blowing the whistle all the damn time instead of playing the advantage.

It would definitely be interesting to see Priestly's rules ported over to fantasy. I've read through Beyond the Gates of Antares Beta and the activation method definitely looks interesting. Mantic seems to have gone a somewhat similar route with Warpath's Alpha rules.
