Mi.

If i use a rhino that has a squad of any non-powered armour troops they can shoot from the hatch and the vehicle becomes open topped. Does that also mean i can move 12" and assault from this now open topped vehicle?

Since you'd have to get out in the movement phase, before you made it open-topped in the shooting phase, I'd say try again.

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

What if you had an attached character that left the rhino/chimera during the movement phase?

It only makes the vehicle open topped in the enemy shooting phase. So no you cannot.

Ah yes, the rulebook. It does make this particular thing pretty black and white. So much for the carapace clad Cannoness of Doom.

couldn't you take SM's and then add in Witch hunter allies, then attach the cannoness to some marines in a land raider?

She can't be attached to them. She can join them.

I'm not seeing anything particularly useful about doing so, however...
