I want to here from veteran painters on how they achieve thier yellow looks especially with regards to Fists.  What color wash do you use over the yellow to achieve your shading.

Paint or prime a white undercoat. Paint your yellows on top of that. You can mix in a very little bit of orange to "darken" up the yellow or use a manufacturer's brand if you prefer. Highlighting/shading is done the same as with other colors, just be more careful because errors with dark colors have to be corrected with white paint and then yellow ot top of that. GW makes yellow and orange ink that can be mixed to create a dark yellow that you can ink into crevaces and such.

Yellow does not cover well except over white.

I've also seen people use a "Bubonic Brown" (I think?) color (or some light yellowish-brown) as the basecoat over the white primer, and then start going up with the yellows.  And you will need several coats.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

be careful how much brown OR orange you use. I know the following may be a littl eodd but... before deciding how to do the yellow I think you have to decide whatthe accent color will be.... My imp fists are 5th company and have black as their company color. I highlight the black with dark blues as opposed to greys.

If I were to highlight or use orange or brown with that kind of black I would get a real mess. The black would seem way out of place.

If you are planning to use red as the accent color (I think that is 3rd company) then you are okay.

I have been base coating white, layer of golden yellow, a black wonder wash to add depth, then a heavy drybrush of golden yellow, then a highlight of mixed golden yellow and skull white.. then if it needs it a further highlight of skull white on the extreme edges.

No brown OR orange because of the black.

Here's another discussion on painting yellow, with good suggestions (I think).

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

I utterly abhor painting yellow, and avoid brush-painting yellow at all costs. I always spray if at all possible.

Generally I start with a good white base coat, sometimes followed by a pale tan/sand color if I don't want it TOO bright, and then a series of thinned out coats of yellow. let them dry all the way if you can, between coats, as it does give much more even results.
