My probably sloppy search of the forums did not yield any results, so here's my question:

Can a unit with counter-assault use it to engage an enemy other than the one that charged it?  The wording says that they must use their 6" move to get as many models into b2b with "the enemy" as possible.  This could be read in two ways.  "The enemy" could refer to the enemy as a whole, meaning you can charge anything that's close enough if you retain your coherency, including models not even engaged in assault.  To me, though, that's against the spirit of the rule.  "The enemy" could also refer to the enemy that charged the counter-assaulters, mentioned above in the text of the rule.

What do people think?

"That thou wouldst bring them only death,/ That thou shouldst spare none,/ That thou shouldst pardon none/ We beseech thee, destroy them."

I think it would take a pretty twisted reading of the rules to 'counter-attack' a different unit.

I dare you to try it at a tournament; I'd be interested to see if you come away without a fat lip...

As a rule of thumb, the designers do not hide "easter eggs" in the rules. If clever reading is required to unlock some sort of hidden option, then it is most likely the result of wishful thinking.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake;
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Hello Ixe,

If you're talking about the 'Counter Charge' special rule - then no, I would say you definitely could *NOT* contact additional 'models' belonging to units not already part of the current HTH. Clearly stated, no you can't lock or engage 'new' units into the HTH with counter charge. The reason behind this is much the same as the wording of the 'Pile in' move in the 4th Ed core rules. If you look at the rules for Pile In on page 44 - you'll note that it says you have to move models up to 6 inches to get as many as possible into base to base contact with the enemy, but it also clearly states that it may not be used to contact enemy units that are not currently involved in the assault. This seems to set a pretty clear president. In 4th Edition it looks very clear that the only way to 'lock' additional units into HTH other than charging them is via winning an HTH combat and then consolidating into a nearby unit. Gone are the days when a single Berzerker formation or Brood of Genestealers could eat 80% of an IG army single handedly in HTH. (And that's a good thing to my thinking.)

Yeah, I hate it when a worthless thread degenerates into a semi-useful discussion. Never again!
