I noticed the O & G book doesn't mention the Dogs of War at all.  Previous books included a listing in the Rare section, but since the Orcs don't have one, does this mean I cannot take them?  On the same thought, how about Ogres?

I admit, I am totally confused about this too. Neither the 7th ed. Orc & Goblins or the 7th ed. Empire army books make any provision for taking DoW. In my group, we allow them to be grandfathered in, as a rare choice, for tradition's sake. I have no idea what the rules at a tournament would be, or what GW plans to do with DoW in the future.

He's got a mind like a steel trap. By which I mean it can only hold one idea at a time;
it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Note that the specific rules for each DoW unit usually states which armies can or can't take them. In that case, you could just go by the RoR's rules. You only get into trouble with the more generic DoW units.

Asmodai,

not quite. Specific rules for the Regiments of Renown limit who can or cannot take them. The generic dogs of war units simply count as a rare choice if used in a non DOW army. Which is odd as you can take generic dwarves in an orc army, but Long Drong's Slayer Pirates cannot.

Jaghatai,

I would have to say this is a case where the specific DOW rules take presidence over the army list in the specific rulebooks.

Anyway, this is another leak in the 7th ed rules... what to do about generic DOW units and Regiments of Renown.

Going by the spirit and intent of the rules, I believe they should be allowed.  But it seems that RAW leans towards not allowing them, as the army doesnt have a "roster slot" for DoW in its most recent printing.

I've looked for any official clarifications or rulings, but can't find a thing.  It seems like this is so ambiguous that the  "ask opponents (or TO) permission" method might necessary until Gee-Dub makes their call.

This is something GW should have put in the FAQ.

That said, I did hear secondhand that they were left out deliberately, and that you are supposed to simply use the DoW rules to tell you which army can use what.

The reason they were left out is that thousands of new players were buying army books, looking in the Rare section, and saying "Where can I find the rules for these DoW guys?" And GW was constantly having to point people at out of print books/WD. GW decided to leave the reference to DoW OUT of everyone else's army books, to avoid this confusion.

Experienced players (or new players learning from them) can reference the out of print rules, and everyone will be able to reference the DoW army book when they finally print it again.

Actually, O&G cannot hire generic Dwarves. If you read the DoW army rules, it actually states that most armies can hire all DoW, but some armies can't hire certain units.

Manf:

As soon as I posted that, I thought it was odd myself. So, I checked, and you're right. Those dwarves might like gold, just not Orc gold. And, figures, you notice it slightly before I could double check my notes.

So, my bad about that.

DoW was left out for a reason, and you'll notice that all new codices will not have the slot for DOW. This is because DOW will be getting a new army book, a new army book, with all the updated rules and who can take what.

Source?

I don't doubt you, just interested to hear where you did.

Go to the Dogs of War section on the GW site. It says that the DoW entry has been omitted from the new books, but that they can still be used.

Winning isn't important. It's the taking apart that counts!
