Ok, I played 5 man Las/Plas squads with my Word Bearers, but after a while, I simply just dropped the Plasma Gun. For the most part, it was a non factor. Heavy infantry wouldn't get within range and heavy armor stayed out of its' range as well. I occasionally got some use out of it with careless deep strikers, but this was a rare occassion. After a while, I simply just saved myself the 10 points and dropped the Plasma altogether as my lascannon was the weapon that got all the use.

I keep hearing how great the las/plas combo is, but I find it to be of limited use. I can see uses vs. Tyranid big creatures as they tend to get in the 24" range, but that's about it.

Help me out, what am I missing here?

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby.

Many armies advance into its range. The ones that it is useless against are all long range shooting armies (about 1/3-1/4 of the armies out there)
If that is all you play against then drop away. Usually its lost cost is offset by the substantial damage it can do if given the chance (low cost high payoff)

You need to build your army around your gear thou. If you would like your gear to work for you, you need to structure your army so that you can place what gear you want in what location. I know this all sounds out there but you just need to look at what you want done with that item of gear. Lascannon needs to be in the middle if not end of your set up per say. Items you dont need, need to be at the start of your set up to draw the enemy out.  Tactic free of charge /grin
