How do you arm your dire avenger exarch? The options are: 2x shurieken catas for the extra shootiness. shimmer shield and power weapons, gives a little kick in cc and everyone a 5+ inv save. diresword and pistol, extra power weapon attack. single catapult, shrug if you are tight on points. I auto take both special skills because they both seem useful. At first i thought the 2x catas are the only logical choice, however it seems that taking the shimmer shield and power weapon makes the unit more versitil over all. you can still bladestorm and get off 27 shoots, however you can also shoot than charge heavy units and hold them up. nothing like holding up a unit of terminators with troops 1/2 their costs. what do you take with your exarch?

I go for the extra shuricat. But then again I almost always play in COD so I dont need the shimmer shield.
Works well when mixed with the extra shooty exarch power and attack denial power.
But if you go with the tactic of serpents who touch each others butts..(heh) then the cover save is a must I would think.

Shimmershield has its' uses even in Cityfight. It's a 5+ Inv Save in assault. This can be very important against squads packing a lone powerfist/powerweapon.
I go with a bit of all rounder unit. Exarch with Defend/Bladestorm Powerweapon/Shimmershield. This unit has become one of my favorites in my army. Now, if I could just get them painted.

No earth shattering, thought provoking quote. I'm just someone who was introduced to 40K in the late 80's and it's become a lifelong hobby. |

Points are really tight in my list so I just gie my DA exarch the 2 cataplts and blade storm. I use the 18" range ( and a conveniently placed wave serpent) to protect them from assault so the shield and defend aren't so important. I am glad to see the DA has really started to be an aspect that is actually getting used. That rocks. ender502

Depends on the role they are playing for me, I have 2 patterns I've liked.
If they are the core of my troops then, Bladestorm + Dual Cats...since I have other CC troops to counter assault and keep them free of assaults.
If they are backing up a Guardian Core in my Eldar Shalt Know No Fear list (Avatar center peice) then he gets the Shimmer + PW, the guardians provide the fire power and these guys tie up a unit or two long enough for the Guardians to setup a finishing volley once the Dire Avenger tar pit goes down.
