Does anyone know the specific type of resin that Forgeworld uses?  Or how to make something comparable?  I'm looking for a soft resin that can be poured into molds and when dry will be closer to plastic rather than granite in terms of consistency and weight.

To be honest, I'm not sure. It may be alumilite, but I suspect they also have a high amount of microballons in there as well.

Personally, I have found it a bit too rigid and without enough sheer strength. This results in thinner spots cracking off too easily.

Forge world uses a number of different resins/fillers depending on what they are casting.

What are you trying to cast? By wanting a softer resin, are you planning on carving the product?

I use Smooth-On's 320 for my casting. You can see pics of the product in my blog. It casts well with a bit of talc and has a hard finish.

Edit:  try checking out this page  http://www.smooth-on.com/liqplas.htm The hardness rating of the product I recommended is 70, but they have other products with hardness ratings of 45.  Maybe something like Smooth cast 45D is what you want.

Basically, I'm looking at casting Space Marine bits to make my own custom figures. Chapter shoulder pads, chest, and possibly weapons are what I'm planning on first. Vehicle doors possibly after that. I want a softer resin because it works better for when I do conversions with what I've cast and is more forgiving should I need to modify the cast product for fit & finish.

i have used an epoxy resin for moulds from the one hobby shop i sometimes go to .they are an independant store that has everything . when i asked about resins they sent me to the R/C airplane section & handed me a 2 part resin it was clear 1 bottle had a red cap the other a black cap . i don't remember the name it was real thin about the thickness of cooking oil. it worked out fine for the torsos i made. i was also told i could make it thinner w/rubbing alcohol. hope that helps!?!
