Are immortals really that important to a competitive necron list or can you get away with not taking them?

I find that they are a bit expensive (not points wise) and would try to not use them if I can help it any suggestions? Do destroyers really fill an immortal's place?

your thought are appriciated

Convert plastic necron warriors into immortals. they're very very good

Went digging through my old posts, and guess what? I've been hating on mat ward since before it was cool

hate the figures - putting them together is a nightmare. I converted mine from warriors too

And yes, they're great gamewise, so well worth putting in your army.  (As well as destroyers)

How good are they? If they were troops choices, there'd be no reason to take warriors.

There is a saying that the only bad thing about a necron army with 30 immortals is the cost associated with 30 immortals.

They are my second favorite after destroyers. I like three units of 6 deployed close enough to one another to support each other on WWB rolls. Thier effective range of 30' on the move is also nice for mobility purposes.

They're great, because they have the range to avoid HtH, and they have the toughness to avoid instant death, thus getting WBB rolls on nearly all ranged attacks.

They are 50% more expensive than warriors, and about twice as effective.

How would you go about converting them from warriors? I thought about that but couldn't come up with anything that made me happy.

Immortals are so important and so effective that you would be hard-pressed to make a competitive list without them. Other than going the all-destroyer route, you pretty much can't compete without them. Their incredible toughness, excellent range, and very good strength all combine to make a unit that you really can't go wrong taking.

After Destroyers, Immortals are my primary target against any Necron opponent. Their greater squad size ensures that simply wiping them off the face of the board (which is generally so easy to do with destroyers) is very difficult. In every game I've played against Necrons, the Immortals have always been the strongest influencing factor on how close the game is.

It really is quite hard, if not impossible, to find a unit in the Necron codex that is as efficient or powerful.

Ba-zziiing!

Exactly.

T5, assault 2 heavy bolters for a 50% increase in points over a warrior is very good. I might even hazard to say that they are alot better than twice as effective.

I really like to charge with mine the turn they fire. I often decimate the unit on the opponents turn, making myself free to move and fire again on my turn. The biggest benefit of that (and the main reason why i assault with them) is to keep them from being fired on by every other unit.

It doesnt always work that well, but if you choose your fights, odds are that you will find a way to make that work.

Thats applies to almost every army..

Not so much. For a lot of armies, the selections in the Elites category perform different roles than the Troops. Here, Immortals do exactly what Warriors do, but better.

Yeah, if warriors and Lictors were troops, I would still take gaunts and stealers.

If stormtroopers were elites I would still take guardsmen...oh wait...that's how it is anyways...

re how to convert warriors into immortals, here's a comparison pic showing my attempt:

in hindsight i should have done more to make them bigger and meaner, but they're ok...  As well as the gun, the shoulderpads are built up (and the back of the neck and waist armour, but you can't see that from this shot)

At 1850, very well.  At 1500, hard to fit with all the necessary trimmings.

Yeah, if warriors and Lictors were troops, I would still take gaunts and stealers.

The point where this comparison fails is that warriors and lictors suck whereas Immortals are quite possibly one of the best values in the entire game.

Move and shoot T5 3+ save multishot move and shoot tankbusting that always gets back up for 28 pts? Sign me up.

24-30 immortals plus trimmings is probably the best necron army out there. Scarabs really complement them well.

hmm... it's a pretty low army, model-count-wise... converted from warriors, they'd be pretty cheap, too. Add a lord, two monoliths, destroyers and the required troops and you've got a pretty cheap army. I'll start doing some plasticard monoliths right now.
