I had an idea for cheap shelving that allowed light to get to models
for visibility. The idea was "stacking paper trays."

Now, stacking trays can go as high as you like, but they are designed to
hold paper, not pewter. What are the chances that stacking a bunch of
paper trays and sticking pewter models on them would be a structurally
unsound idea? I imagine that as the trays stacked higher, there would
be an increased stress on the lower trays until eventually something would
give.

Anyway, random thought.

Buy good quality, and you should be able do go at least a half dozen trays high.

Worst case, you can put some kind of support in the middle of each tray, kinda like those things they use in pizza boxes to keep the cheeze off the box top.

If we're talking about those 'office style' filing trays, I would totally glue them together. No way I'd put miniatures on a stack of trays that could easily go toppling over.

Check out Weetoysoldiers.com

What's the price range for this project? Ikea had a nice display case (4 sides of glass and glass shelves) for around $100. It either had room for a light or came with one, I can't rmember.

My qualm about usning "paper trays" for this is the fact that the higher you go the easier it is to knock over since the trays won't make a solid structure. It might be cheap, but unless you can find the appropriate trays I think its risky.

Yeah. I was thinking that too...

How many shelves was that Ikea display?

Oh yeah, I think I've seen it. It takes some space though,
right? I was looking for something with a slightly smaller footprint...

I just picked up an Ikea "Detolf" glass case. It's 4 glass shelves, 4 glass walls, and has a footprint of about 16"x14"x64"". Really quite compact, and can take a light. I thought It'd be overcrowded, but I got my Reven, Khador, Cygnar and trolls all in the case without overwhelming it. Price was $60, and it goes together much more easily than one would expect. It IS heavy, though, so get some help with it.

There is a HUGE Ikea store next to the mall of america here. Its literally a day trip to wander around through there. Enough to urge Tyler Durden to make the TRW building into a smoldering crater...

I was going to order some Ikea shelves before moving to thee twin cities and am glad I waited. The shipping was ridiculously expensive.

Anyways, there are quite a few very decent display cases there for quite cheap prices. Atleast a dozen under $100.

I bought two that are about 4 feet tall. It has a hinged fron door as well as a hinged door on the top thatt angles at about 45 degrees. This top area is about 18" at the highest point. They cost me $150 for both after tax.

I tried to find a pic for you on the Ikea site, but they dont have it on there. Ill see what the design is called (propably "inga" or something equally dumb as all of their designs have slowed stereotypical european names)

[edit]

I was going to buy the detolf shelves, but the lack of adjustable shelves made it a pass for me. I could have fit four more shelves into that sucker for the models I have.

@Patrick: do you remember what the name of that system you're describing is? I'm stopping by Ikea again this weekend with the plans of picking up another Detolf, but would be happy to look at an alternative (I didn't see what you're describing, but maybe I didn't look in the right place?).

I have a Detlof too and it's awesome. I've had it about 3 years. I want to get a second in the near future since the lighting system will work up to two units.

I dont have the name. But it is setup next to the other cases such as the detolf.

I am going by Ikea before I go to the minneapolis aiport today  so I will try to get the name if they have any left.

They must have discontinued it if it isnt on the main site anymore. Regardless, I hear they can ship whatever item you want to your local Ikea for free, so maybe it will help.

Awesome. Thanks. I'll also look more carefully for what you're describing...

Hey yair, sorry for not getting back to you sooner.

I did indeed check that very dy for it at the Minneapolis Ikea, but they no longer have it.

I was told it was entirely discontinued. I am saddened by this, as it was the best display case they had and was going to buy another afterwork that day.

But just in case they might have it in you area, I will provide a rough sketch of what it looks like.

This whole affair is framed in wood, unlike the detolf.
