Does anyone know what colour the original Dark Angels legion, or the fallen were painted?

I know they were black, but were they black all over, or black with green bits, or silver shoulder pads or what?

Thanks

So in other works, black on a black background, with black highlights and white chapter markings. And black guns, with black trim.

All's fair in Love and War.

Except Alaitoc, Blood Angels, 6-Dreadnaught Marine armies, Deathwing, Daemons, Necrons, Siam-Hann, Dark Reapers, 3+ cover saves, shooty Ork armies, jet packs, 3+ saves on Eldar, Drop Pods, Squiggoths, Daemonic Runes, etc.
Oh, and people using flamers against my Kroot. I hate that.

Unless you want to go with the early Rogue Trader look, before GW changed the DA to green, which was black armor, red trim pads & red dagger/wings chapter symbol, with black or red guns.

I didn't think they had red trim on their pads.

I'm doing my Fallen in Black with Bone iconography with a little red.

They used to wear all black and the old bekie marines guns didn't have cases so they were all metal! Well thats how I remember it...

@SW1, guess what their favourite colour was then.

So either all black (and we mean, all black) or black with red bits?

*Sigh*  Young 'uns.

Black all over, metal guns, red stripe down their beaky helmet, red sword and wings emblem, red eyes.  That's the original color scheme.  Note that they didn't have red on their pads, because the original models didn't have trim on the pads, just the studs on the left shoulder.

...red stripe down their beaky helmet...

The Sergeant wore the Red Stripe. Red and Black for Vet Sergeant.

Perhaps in some later revision, but the original Rogue Trader book had them all (any chapter) with stripes. The sarges had chevrons under their symbol on the right shoulder.

Well it's not official but it looks nice and is really quick to paint, I use it on my Mk6 Power Armoured Vets:

Armour/Bolter Casing: Base Chaos Black, Heavy Dry Brush Codex Grey, Fine detail Boltgun metal chipping on appropreate areas (Can clean up excess grey with watered down Chaos Black).
Joints: Drybrush Scab Red.
Eyes: Base Vermin Brown, Dwarf Bronze.
Plastron Eagle/Skulls/Emblems: (If using 'Aquila' chest, which I think still works on a corvis suit) Base fortress grey, Kommando Khaki, Burnished Gold, Chaos Black rinse.

If you're looking to go with the Rogue Trader scheme, listen to frightnight, guys. I was just looking at my copy of Rogue Trader and he's 100% correct.

I'd say go with the Rogue Trader look then - all-black marines have a bad habit of looking like a 9-year old's Black Templars (but look, they are painted - black. That's the colour, look, it says so right here).

And those Chevrons are STILL some of the coolest iconography in the game to date; I liked em so much I had em painted on my leather jacket. Unfortunately while I was a younger man and still in my "gutterpunk" phase I had to sell my leather for food one day.
Elusive I was wondering if you could post an image for me.... I'd really like to make some custom decals to use on my Raven Guard Vet. Sergeants, since I already have to have the Chapter Symbol printed up.
