Ok, so, I'm pretty sure that a new Chaos Codex is in the near future. And even though Eldar got to keep 99% of what they had and then got a few more nice add-ons (ahem, Harleys) I'm willing to bet that Chaos get's dumbed down a bit, especially the Iron Warriors. So with that in mind, I decided to dust off my 2002 Dallas GT IW and add in some "fresh" models and play the IW while the iron's hot (pun intended). So while I can, I decided to add another unit of Oblits (because its fun) and a new DP and a Basilisk for the heck of it. I'll play it until the new rules come out and then hopefully I really won't care. So... here's some of the models I just finished...

Ok, so I really showed my age on this one. When I was playing around with the graffitti, I meant to write 'Perturabo Rulez!' not 'Perturabo Rocks!' How much more 80's can ya get. Sheesh...

More pictures here...

I come from a time when basecoats were white, miniatures were metal, and my ork's gun glowed red; I am a McVey disciple.

I like it. I like that your Demonlord use marine heads as a Juice box...

Not bad. The Lord is a bit stock, but theres nothing wrong with that as its a great model. The cables, fist and imperial fist shake are great and add a lot to the the character of you prince. The basilisk has a nice filthy feel to it. The ob is nice, I've never been a fan of the new models but you do it justice. I converted my own from Ork mega armour. Yeah the consensus is that all the legions will be dumbed down considerabley. Lets just hope they don't strip all the fluffyness from the undivided legions and make them all one cookie cutter format.

They look great, really like the prince (and the backdrop ). I'm guessing the oblit bases aren't completed?

But I totally feel you on getting one last blitz out of Chaos this summer before the pendulum swings back on us, and I plan to play the hell out of my Undivided boys before they take away my cult marines, etc.

Great stuff here, and best of luck milking the cheese while it's still around

Very Nice , Itll be a great shame if they do Dumb down the legions a lot , because as it currently stands , the codex lets you field a hell of a lot of personal choice items that just add nicely to the feel of an army.

Darkness your name is extremely pertinent for this discussion unfortunately.

Sadly it seems that Darkness beckons on all GW armies in the future. During Eye of Terror I invested a lot in an Ulthwe Strike Force just to be told in the new codex that it no longer exists and is not valid. Leavign me to tailor my models around the new simplified army list that GW provided.

Vanilla lists really annoy me. Imagine how i felt when i relaised I couldn't customise my new Dark Angel Force Commander.... He must have this or this... and if you ask really nicely maybe this.

It seems that ease of accessibility for new gamers is destroying the finer points of our GW hobby. I agree that these approaches to army list construction can have a place but not at the cost of truely tailoring your armies for the advanced players.

It will come to a point where we all just use the same models and the same stat lines for every force. Then you have to ask why do we bother having different armies or indeed conversions... we may as well all use milk bottle caps to represent troops.

I for one thought that GW had moved away from this and learnt from their past errors in this respect. Sadly it seems not.

A vanilla Chaos codex would truly be a terrible thing.

*cough*warmachine*cough*

Don't get me wrong, they make great models and have some wonderful ideas, and there are quite a few Hordes models I'd consider getting just to build and paint (and use in GW games ), but I can't play WM or Hordes mainly because the list selection process just doesn't exist.  Heroes are completely and totally locked down, and setting foot on the PP forums it becomes clear that most all lists revolve around one or two tricks and winning combos of units and abilities.  Then with similar to identical lists you get models which are, aside from painting (yes, a big factor), identical as well.  I've seen a few conversions for PP stuff, but nowhere near like in the GW hobby.  If PP is an answer to GW's failings, it isn't mine.

But aye, you didn't even mention PP, and you do have some very nice Chaos models here.  Battle on while the battling is to be had, I say.

haha

Well I've never played Warmachine and probably wont so i can't comment there.

But definately I'd use their models for GW armies. As I would with any decent model. To be honest i've always prefered building and painting armies around the background of GW universes more than actually gaming. So anything that looks cool is game.

Anyway we digress, great conversions and I especially like the Imperial Fist Frappacino!

indeed.

personally , i dont think theyll go completely vanilla. , they make far too much cash out of the tasty legion box sets for EC , IW and suchlike for that , but with GW who knows what's next.

A good way around this system would be to use something much similar to the SM chapter traits / IG disciplines for each army. at least that way you have ease of access for new players , and also the customisation potential for the more experienced vets.
