I started this game with Tau and I lost interest when GW broke sheild drones in 4th ed. But now with a $20 codex they work again! (thanks GW for the negative FAQ, and a codex thats not much more than a 2 page update) but anyhow I rant silly like an old woman screaming in the rain.

Shas El with Plasma Rifle, Missle Pods and Multi-tracker

3 Crisis Suits , also in fireknife configuration, team leader with 2 sheild drones

3 Crisis Suits , also in fireknife configuration, team leader with 2 sheild drones

3 x Hammerhead with Railgun, Burst Cannons, Decoy Launchers

4 x 4 Devilfish w/ Decoy Launchers and 12 Firewarrriors (one has 11 due to lack of points)

this is just a rough plan for now, Ididn't invest many points in the HQ and I don't even own all the vehicles (one of each I think)

I don't have a tarpit unit, and against drop pods, or summoning type armies I'm going to have a heck of a time. Also I was thiking to work in a unit of pathfinders because the new rules for targetlights are amazing.

This List is for 1750pts

Thoughts?

Mechanized Tau are nasty. List looks pretty solid. You can shoot the crap out of most armies and park a Devilfish in thier lines for those units that break and escort them right of the board. Better to put your Crisis teams in teams of two with bond. Easier to hide and deny victory points ect. Drop the shield drones and team lead. Gives you more versatility in your shot selection also. Having 4 pod and 2 plas shots at range will help you against those Eldar skimmer armies.

I think thats a pretty solid list. Lots of anti infantry power from the FW and lots of high powered and AP for tougher targets and armor. Pathfinders really make FW go the extra mile. FW firing at BS 5 and negating cover or ignoring target priority really lates you lay the hurting on someone. I think that their scout move and the markerlight bonuses are more effective than a 4th FW squad, plus it gives you some variety, but either way I think your list is going to cause some greif!

My list is fairly similar, although not as mobile : commander kit as fireknife, two individual firekives, broadside, 2 hammerheads, pathfinders+fish, 6 stealth, 3 FW teams of 12. (thats 1500 it looks like you are using a 2000 pt list here). My last battle with them cut a DA players force down to just his chaplain by turn 3(which my FW actually killed in hth as he worked his way through 2 squads of them).

I put some more thought into it, thanks to the suggestions I've been given so far.

With all the possibilites of deepstrikers that actually work these days its better to split the crisis suits up into smaller teams, pairs. Pairs won't even require bonding if they break. Most of the time they'll just be jumping up and down like a yo-yo shooting at something til its dead. I'd love to buy some toys on the crisis suit commander but I seem to have run out of points at 1750. This list is exactly 1750 and hmmm.. extreme cookie cutter looking!

I'm down to needing 1 more devilfish and 1 more hammerhead. Anyone want to trade me?

SMS is probably the third best thing in the tau codex (behind JSJ and railguns). If you're going mech you really should take it. At least on the railheads. It allows you to stay hidden and just pour fire into the enemy. Couple that with JSJ and its so tough on the other army.
