Went to my local tournie and won best painted army with my wolves.  I did not do so well in the actuall tournie got 60 out of a max 120 for games.  My brother has won the best painted 3-4 years  running.  His army was better painted but I think it was the sheer amount of conversions that won it for me.

In case anybody was curious the top tables were all eldar and monster Nid armies.  there were about  60 players.  the tournament was Mayhem 07

Nice work with the Chaos Warriors... they give the Space Wolves a striding image. Maybe a bit too much of that "slow and purposeful" pose for my taste, but still nicely done.

Congratulations Beef, I hope you can give us some infos about the gaming side of the tourney as well, even if you didn't fare that well.

Well, you've said that the top lists were Eldar and Monster nids. I can imagine Monster Nids, but how did the eldar lists look like? Flying Circus, or something different?

Also, were there any interesting armies or an army which made it to the top even though you don't see it every day? Stuff like that.

EDIT: Oh, and what mission/scenarios did you guys play?

Unfortunatly NO interesting armies made it to the top table, In my 3rd game of the first day I made it to the top table but spent the next days 3 games being kicked further and further down the table.

the ledar list were all pretty similar, 2 squads of harliquins, a couple of wave serpents and some smaller troops with vibro cannons. not to sure what the rest of the ledar stuff was as I dont play them. But the top 10 were Nid and eldar armies.

First mission was Recon, then rescue, take and hold, Assasination (but hq had to get into the other deployment zone) seek and destro and another one that I cant remember now.

There was one Ork army but he kept getting beet, (very nice guy though) Oh yeah there was a very nicely painted Soul drinkers army and a pre hersey World eaters army. No witch hunters or DE, 1 ork and 1 grey knights army. Majority were eldar, than marines (ie BA, SW, BT, 13th company vanilla BUT no DA) a few gaurd and tau armies and quite a few chaos armies but only 1 IW which was odd. 4 Nid monster armies, of which 3 were on the top tables.

But ultimatltyit was the Nids and Eldar that won the day

Congrats. Like the conversions. The minute those chaos warriors were released, my first thought was. "Alright! Space Wolves!"

Congrats mate, a nice army of conversions!

I especially like your armour. Are you using the converted Challengers as Predators, Russes or Land Raiders?

they are preditors, but in bigger games I will double them up as baneblades as they are nearly that big.

I like your army, don't get me wrong, but to me it only looks satisfactory in the paint job.  While the conversions are absolutely lovely, they should not contribute to "best painted army" as they have nothing to do with painting... (now if one was to call it "best looking army", you'd be a shoe-in, and perhaps that's exactly what the tourney interpreted "best painted army" as!)

That one tank looks pretty huge!  What % of your vehicles would you say are made from plasticard?

*edit*
nitpick: put snow on your ferensian wolves' bases!

The rhinos are entirly made from plasticard. the preditors are 90% model kit and 10 % plasticard and other bits.

I lost my original wolves the day of the tournie so these 2 had to be put in last minite.

As for best painted, points are awarded for basing, ease of identifying squad, conversions and theme and obviously painted.

Now your right my painting is not top quality, if you saw what my brother entered you would say he should have won best painted( he has the last 3 years running) and a few others were also painted better than mine but where these armies lost points was conversions, theme and squad markings.

these have been introduced to try and make it easier to pick a winner when there are so many great painted armies that enter.

I see, yeah it is hard to judge the mere artistic merit of one's paint style without being opinionated, probably best to add in the other factors.

Very nice job on assembling two Rhinos from scratch with plasticard in the last minute!

You know I wasn't sold on the rhinos when i first saw the pictures of them unpainted, but they look really really good painted up, well done. I like the converted challengers, not sure I'd use them as preditors myself though, with something nearly as big as a baneblade you're a lot more visable.

Thanks for the comments guys. The 3 Rhinos took a few weeks in all. It was the 2 wolves that were put in last minite hence the different bases as they were old mini. the ones for the army with matching bases to the rest of the squads I lost the day before. (they have yet to materialise)

I like the conversions on the SW models, but I don't like the tanks...they are not 40kish enough for my tastes....

Looks like the trend of Eldar/Nids continues and yet GW is focusing on toneing down marine lists who are not even top finishers anymore. Nice pics.

Thats so true, people complain about Ass cannons so much and 3+ saves yet where do the marine list finish up?? Not even the Top ten. out of 70 contestants the top marine player came 25th, I came 30th with my wolves

That seems odd. Wouldn't it seem to be more logical to use "best painted" as the primary decider, then use conversions/squad markings and such to choose from the top few?

Not to knock your work at all mate, I haven't seen any of the others, after all.

cheers,

Did you scale up these Marines to be taller than "normal" Marines? If so, how did you do it, and what scale did you use. I'm looking at a similar project for my Grey Knights, I was thinking of making them around 45mm in height and perhaps 54mm for Terminators. I'm sick of seeing Marines at the same scale as Guard and Sister of battle.

Man down, Man down....

@ Delephont, all I did was use the chaos warriors sprue and then added some platforms to my marines. this made them easil a head taller than my normal marines, check the link to see them against a stabdard marine for size.

@scipio.au. best painted was the primary decider but then the other things went into it. Ie base, quad marking etc. the marks were out of 50 so if a few scored top marks then the extra bits came into play for marks. Like I said there was 1 or 2 better painted (like my brothers ) but some did not have squad marking etc or were not based properly

Congrats. A very themed army if I do say so. The poses are a bit static but the size of the marines more than makes up for it. Hooray for True scale.

Congrats Beef. Good to see your multiple conversions were respected.
