Hi all.  So here is a 1500pt Space Marine list I whipped up.  I wanted to do something different than the usual min/max las/plas, 20 assault cannons list.  Basically, I want a mobile element to claim objectives if need be, but I also want a good base of fire.  I like HTH combat, but I don't want an entire army geared for it like BA.  So here is what I came up with.  I'm wanting to know what glaring weaknesses there are in this list.  I am trying to take on all-comers, but that doesn't mean I want a list that can beat every army, it just means I want a list that can at least put up a good fight against any army.  Basically, do you think this list could win as many as it loses?  So here it is.

HQ

Master with lightning claws, terminator honors, jump pack, frag grenades

Elite

(5) Terminators with powerfists and storm bolters, 1 assault cannon

Dreadnought with Twin Linked Lascannon and Missile Launcher

Troops

(8) Tactical Squad with Sgt. w/ power fist, bolt pistol, terminator honors; plasma gun, rhino w/ smoke, extra armor

(8) Tactical Squad with Sgt. w/ terminator honors, power fist, bolt pistol; plasma gun, rhino w/ smoke

(8) Tactical Squad with Sgt. w/ terminator honors, power fist, bolt pistol; missile launcher,

Fast Attack

(6) Assault Squad with Sgt. w/ terminator honors, power fist, plasma pistol; plasma pistol x2

Heavy Support

Whirlwind

Predator with twin linked lascannon and lascanon sponsons

So there it is.  It all adds up to one point shy of 1500.  Look forward to your comments and thanks in advance.

So am I to infer correctly that by the absence of replies that there is no such thing as a feasable Space Marine list that is not min/max las/plas, 20 assault cannons? That makes me sad.

Not sure how you infer that, If you are going to make inference then look at what you asked for " I'm wanting to know what glaring weaknesses there are in this list".

lack of replies may indicate there is no glaring weakness.

honestly there are a couple things i would do
the last tac squad drop the vet power fist and 2 guys to add two guys to the assult squad

that puts it up to 8 men and down to a 6 man with a rocket,
drop the plasma pistol on the  sgt in the assault squad its 15 points for basicly one shot the entire game, maybe two.

I would also look at the trait that lets you have true grit and counter attack for the two tac squads in rhinos, between the plasma pistol and the other points from above you have enought to give one squad it already.

also with the termies either take 2 assault cannons or don;t take them at all really,   2 cannons in 1500 points is more than fair.

the whirlwind isn;t worth takeing really, so there are the points for the second assault and the true grit/counter attack trait

I would also recomend the use of  the 3 wound chaplain over the commander, he will make the assault squad work better for about the same number of points.

I might also  suggest looking at No Mercy No Respite trait for 3 points a pop the assault guys can get furious assault which is where the other half of the whirlwind could go. you could also add it to the tac squads too but that puts them up to like 21 22 points a marine which is way to much. true grite/counter attack is a better buy for the tac marines anyway since they have to use the bolters.

your disadvatages should be something thing like die standing ( no drop pods) and eye to eye ( only 1 bike/speeder unit)

here is that list , i decided my previous post was a little messy and this would explain it a little better

HQ

137 – 3 wound chaplain, term honors, jump pack, bolt pistol, frag

ELITES

135 – dreadnought, twin linked Las, Missile launcher

255 – 5 terminators, storm bolter/power fist set up, 2 assault cannon , tank hunter

TROOP

184 -1 vet Sgt  power fist, 7 marines  plasma gun ( true grit/counter attack)

58 – rhino, extra armor, smoke

184- 1 vet Sgt  power fist, 7 marines  plasma gun ( true grit/counter attack)

58 – rhino, extra armor, smoke

115 - 1 vet Sgt, 5 marines rocket launcher ( i was a good boy and left the vet in )

FAST ATTACK

225 – 1 vet Sgt  power fist, 7 assault marines 2 plasma pistols ( furious charge)

HEAVY SUPPORT

145 - predator annihilator full Las set up

TOTAL 1496

Traits, No Mercy, No Respite and Trust Your Battle-Brothers

Drawbacks, Eye to Eye and Die Standing

This looks very close to the first list you put up model and count wise and should work a lot better, while not being las/plas or assault cannon spam

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

My take based on your non minimax ethic. Not bothered working out the points, it can be added to or taken from easily.

HQ

Junior Chaplain with croxius and power fist, terminator honors, jump pack, frag grenades - The jumping chaplain is a very nice miniature too.

Elite

Five Terminators, with one assault cannon and one heavy flamer. - One boxset! Heavy flamer is a damn good weapon, just overshadowed by the donkey gun.

Dreadnought with Assault cannon and heavy flamer or missile launcher, extra armour - You pay too much for a twin linked lascannon. Always leave the 'or' in as you can swap out your left arm on a whim without changing the points value.

Troops

Ten Tactical Squad with Vet Sgt. w/ power sword, bolt pistol, heavy bolter, flamer, rhino w/ smoke, extra armor. - Every vet sgt gets a powerfist, you minimaxer! This squad is definately anti horde in assault or shooting roles.

Six Tactical Squad with Vet Sgt. w/ power fist, bolt pistol, meltagun. Razorback with twin linked heavy bolters, extra armour. - Smaller close anti tank/character hunter squad.

Six Tactical Squad with lascannon, plasma gun. Razorback with twin linked heavy bolters. - You can afford some lasplas, the Razorback is a turret.

Fast Attack

Seven Assault Squad with Vet Sgt. with power fist and bolt pistol, teleport homer, two flamers. - When it come to piling in for assaults, a rince with two flamers will do more harm than two plasma shots. NEVER give an assault marine vet sgt a plasma pistol, he is too valueable to lose to Get Hot.

Heavy Support

Whirlwind

Predator with autocannon and lascanon sponsons - If you cannot do the job with two Bs4 lascannon a third wont help. This version is cheaperr and has better overall firepower.

I would leave out the Dread in lieu of a Vindicator, this will make your army entirely themed mechanised, except the assault marines who can keep up and the Termies who teleport in for the job then teleport out again afterwards.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Heheh, I'm the bug player he's going up against.  I'm not a big BugZilla guy.  I try to stay balanced;  a few big bugs with a nice compliment of small and medium hordes.  I will have to use a few shots early on to take out the pie or I will die quick... although it does depend on how fast I can get my fragile bugs in CC.  I have thought about going zilla for a game or two just to have some fun.  I may post a list up here later today.  Who knows, I may try it out in our next game.  Then I would agree the pie is much less effective.

Orlanth, you have inspired me. I really like the idea of having a themed mechanised force. I have always been about manuverability with my army lists. I am definitley gonna drop the Dread and pick up the Vindicator for sure. I've always wanted to try one. Thanks to everyone for your thoughts and Colonel, I will see you on the field of battle on Thursday (might even write up a battle report and post it on these forums).

ahhh, you sure you wanna take out that dread? Heheh... j/k  Nice pie but not a huge range.  Pluses and minuses to both.  I think the Vindicator is a good trade-off.  I could always bust out my bugzilla army I came up with

Is there something I'm missing about the Pile In rule? Can you shoot during Pile In moves or were you just using this figuratively? Thanks.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Nothing about the pile in move, just that if you are in assault range, as opposed to pistol range, you are in perfect range for some nasty flamer death. Sure its only S4 Ap5 compared to S7 Ap2 but the number of to wound rolls you will get is impressive.
All in all assault marines are moving into assault range, not 12" shooting, so go with your stengths.
