I want to put black and blue or white checks on my 5th Company Ultramarines (a recommendation on which colors combination is most appropriate would be appreciated as well).  I want to put the checks on shoulder pads, knee caps, power fists, dreadnought legs.  Id like to know how to get them to come out nice and neat.

use masking tape. then clean up the lines with a fine detail brush.

as to colors... I'd look through an art book like insignium astartes

best bet is to paint the lighter colour 1st, then use black to paint the lines over top and fill in. depending on how big the piece im chequering is depends on how i paint it. for smaller pieces like your kneecaps, i would freehand them. on stuff like dreds, taping off the lines to make them nicer looking would probably be best.

Pencils are good. Draw the pattern lightly with a hard pencil and then use this as a guideline when painting.

It's easier to paint the white areas over the black first with a dark grey like Codex grey then paint them white.

Any mistakes or splashes of white/grey can easily be celaned up with the black.

Or you could always use a very fine graphic pen and draw them on.
