Ok , I'm asking for much, but maybe the helpfull people here can help me ;-)

Me and a friend want a 40k army for friendly games, focussing more on special scenario's and fun then min/maxing and tournament play.

Now, we have got busy schedules, and therefore making a list of our own will be hard.

So what I'm asking, is if you guys could help me make a 1500 "all comers" SM list, doesnt really matter which chapter (except maybe the Space Wolves, dont like all the fur etc). Then I can go to the shop, buy all the models, get them painted and be sure that I got something multifunctional and fun.

We have never played 40k before (both Warmachine players) and therefore just want something for fun.

Its very hard to build a list as most poeple have different styles of play. What I might say is a good list another would say is not good and vice versa.

However there are certain units that you can have which can be used in any list no matter what you play.

Me personally would suggest you buy a Commander and possibly a Chaplain as well. You need two tactical squads anyway in order to play any scenario. Dreadnought is a must. A devastator squad is good and also a predator is also very good.

I also tend to field a fast army, using speeders and assualt marines and bikers in my setup. But I know that other players might go for lots of tanks and troops, others might go for a good balance.

My advice would be to go with a balanced army that has equal measure of fast, elite and heavy. Marines are tough so you can't go wrong with more troops.

Sorry I can't be more helpful. The Mega box set might be a good purchase, it would have almost everything you need to start playing with a good force and you can easily buy anything else that takes your fancy.

I agree that building a list from scratch for someone else is problematic.  For me, this is a fun part of playing.  You have chosen an excellent army to play (space marines) to tailor to your style.  For me, I liked the look of the vehicles and being a WW II fanatic, my armies resemble a German mobile combined force theme.  The preds are the panther tanks, the razorbacks are half-tracks, a Land Raider is a Tiger tank, land speeders are the Luftwaffe.  You get the picture.  So here is an army list for you to chew on.  I tend to have bare bones in my list with no "bells & whistles" (aka: wargear/upgrades), but I indulged myself somewhat for you.

Space Marines @ 1500

Chaplain Reclusiarch w/ plasma pistol & crozius, rosarius, jump pack, frag~121

This guy is a standard and easy choice for you to start with.  He makes any squad he is attached to fearless in combat with some nice gimmicks on the charge.  He can shoot well before the charge and has an invulnerable save in combat.  Argueably the best bang for your buck in hand-to-hand for the space marines.  Now you can take away his plasma pistol and replace it with a bolt pistol and termie honors for added HTH punch for the same points.

Assault squad 1x6 w/ bp & ccw, 2 plasma pistols, frag~172

Veteran Sergeant w/ bp & powerfist

This is a great HTH complement for the chappy to lead.  You can use the rhino/razorback to provide cover if there is not enough terrain to take the fight to your enemy and/or use them as a countercharge unit if you choose to sit back and shoot with the rest of your force.  MOBILE AND HOSTILE!!

Tactical squad #1

1x10 w/ missile launcher, plasma gun, bolters~215

Veteran Sergeant w/ bp & thunderhammer

RHINO w/ smoke, extra armor, storm bolter~58

This is your standard versatile "take all-comers" build version.  It can use the mobility of the rhino to close the distance or sit back in defensive firing position.  The ML can use krak for anti-tank or frag for anti-troop.  Plasma gun is also anti-tank and anti-troop dual role assault weapon.  Veteran Sarge w/ HTH power (gave him the thunderhammer for a little spice).  Most use powerfists, so if you want to save 15 points and use it elsewhere, take it from here.

Tactical squad #2

1x5 w/ heavy bolter, flamer~116

Veteran Sergeant w/ combi-flamer & power weapon

RAZORBACK w/ heavy bolter turret, smoke~73

This squad accompanies the tac#1 or can go off on its own to secure objectives.  I gave the vet combi-flamer because I used to run this combination and the added flamer template really is effective.  I am slanted to shooting over assault, but you can use the five points to upgrade to powerfist for more HTH power.

Scout squad 1x5 w/ missile launcher, 4 sniper rifles~95

This squad lets you infiltrate.  You can position them to take out a hidden enemy tank with the ML or sit back in cover and use sniper rifles to target monstrous creatures or other high toughness targets.

WHIRLWIND~85

This little beauty allows you to target hidden squads and adds versatility to use the castellan mines to deny objectives to well armored troops that would otherwise shrug off the AP 4 vengeance missiles.  I used to run 3 of these bad boys, but there were lots of ork and imperial guard armies where I used to play.  One will suffice for an all-comers list.

Predator ANNIHILATOR w/ lascannon sponsons, searchlight~146

Predator DESTRUCTOR w/ heavy bolter sponsons~110

These two pred versions give you one for anti-tank duty (annihilator) and one for anti-troop/light tank duty (destructor).  A perfect combination for an all-comers force.  Some will argue that the annihilator should have heavy bolter sponsons also, but I completely disagree with that build.  Lascannons should be shooting at targets that heavy bolters should not be and vice-versa.  Keep your tanks focused on what they are designed to do.  If you want to move the annihilator and fire, the heavy bolters are useless for the targets the godammers will be hitting (ENEMY HEAVY TANKS).  I prefer to put the annihilator in cover on a hill with good field vision and let it fire 3 lascannons at any thing that presents a threat to my army.  I remember when a guy by the tag name MAULEED would laugh, if he was in a good mood  at anyone putting heavy bolters on an annihilator, write a full page dissertaion on the mathematical ineffectivenes of that joke of a build, and proceed to ask if the best part of you ran down the crack of your mamas arse.  Not sure how he feels about it in the 4th edition, but I think it is oxymoronic (is that a word?) to do so.

DREADNOUGHT w/ lascannon, smoke, searchlight~129

Most will contend that this is a must in any SM army.  If you prefer the assault cannons or some other combination, go for it.  You get versatility with this unit due to all the weapon combos.  I chose the lascannon because I prefer more anti-tank firepower and that destructor would normally be an annihilator for me, which would allow me to the potent assault cannon on the dread.  If you go with the asscannon, consider putting the dread in a drop-pod.  It helps with the lower range of the gun and the suseptibility of the dreads to footslogging through heavy weapons fire.

Veteran squad 1x5 w/ missile launcher~100

I had 100 points so I added this squad.  You can choose to infiltrate them and use them like the scouts or give them tankhunters and target tanks with your strength 9 ML

You can get another land speeder with the points, add more assault marines to your chappy, or add a commander to one of the tac squads for more HTH power and/or rites of battle for shootiness.

Commander Master w/ storm bolter & powersword (shooty version)

Commander Captain w/ pair of lightning claws, iron halo (HTH version)

I tried to give you a sample from each force organization slot.  As you play, you will see other players lists on the battlefield, fall in love with something, learn to hate something I suggested, then kick yourself for replacing it, and so on a so forth in what will seem like a never ending cycle of building more options and changing your list to squeeze out the most effective min/max head-knocking combination of firepower and hand to hand brutality you can combine together to massacre everyone until you finally settle in on somethiong you feel is your "NIRVANA LIST BUILD" and stubbornly play it all the time for purely aesthetic reasons ignoring the sneering and snide remarks on how ineffective your list is in GTT environments.  Sorry, I think that was a flashback.  Anyways, good luck and have fun!
