It includes two bonus tiles that you could actually order separately through
Mail Order.

The terrain on the tiles are 3d, and each one is of a specific type. The way a
campaign seems to work is that players take turns constructing the campaign
map, they play events, play a game, and then resolve a building phase. The
points you gain are based on how much you win by. So a huge victory affects
the map board more than a small one does.

My only issue is that throughout the issue, Johnson stresses the ephemeral
nature of the rules. I understand the necessity of keeping things open, but if
this is an official expansion in the vein of Cities of Death, then maybe they should
be a bit more serious about its implementation.

Though, I can't wait until someone uses the hexes for other games!

hmm, perhaps I should wait outside GW on release day (next Wed over here) and buy everyone's unwanted tiles at some low price - a lot of people will have no use for them.

A shame theyr'e not bigger, or they'd make nice bases for 40K modular terrain

Well if the point is to represent a campaign map...

It's easy enough to power a whole pile of 1" thick styrofoam, cut it into 1' hexes and use that the make modular terrain. I've seen it done.

I'm not sure the result is really worth the effort, but it does let you integrate the terrain directly into the board while maintaining flexibility.

Gaahh! I can't get all of my figures painted, sure as heck not going to waste time painting tiles. Thick, full-color, cardboard, interlocking tiles would have been just fine.

The tiles look so easy to paint though. Spray black, drybrush greens for forests and browns for non-forests and paint blue for water. They don't need to be display case quality.

My local GW store has an open copy for perusal. The book is really a booklet, and the rules are a massive four pages long. It's pretty sad, really. I painted the two freebies that came with my WD, though, and I really dig them. It'll be a great set for map-based campaigns, but I think you're better off using the rules from the General's Compendium or making up your own.

I just got mine. They look fine.

Is anyone else intrigued about the potential of this marketing?

Obviously this is test run to see how it effects sales of White Dwarf and Mighty Empires.

If it's a success, I wouldn't be surprised to see a plastic High Elf or Orc Boy included with the mag as a teaser when the army comes out. It would be great marketing - people buying the mag feel they've got extra value, and players will have a chance to try colour schemes and get hooked on the appearance of the army.

They used to do this. A metal Necron, Aenur the Sword of Twillight (Elf Hero for Mordheim, great mini by Brian Nelson), a plastic Dark Eldar... Shame they don't do it more often. The last time was with BfSP, I think, with a dwarf and a gobbo - though I didn't find any of these two interesting enough to paint (and, thus, buy the mag).
Too bad they don't do it every time they release an army - a single plastic skeleton, or a high elf, or whatever - this would further boost interest in the armies. It's a shame they don't take advantage of this.
