The game board looks a little odd...I'm not sure how we got it that way, but after moving stuff around and ending up with that, it seemed about as fair as you could get.
My basic plan was to protect the basilisks, or, failing that, make him commit so much to killing them that he'd open himself up to massed lascannons, where I could remove his mobile killers (Hammerheads) and then just waltz up the board and outscore him on my strong left flank.
So, there you have it....the center and left bristling with guns, basically giving up the right flank. He has the stealths, commander, a piranha, hammerhead, a crisis team and devilfish all piled into his left.
Roll for first turn, and I get it. Despite the mission, I figure I'll take the first turn and see what kind of damage I can do while the skimmers are stationary.
Turn 1
IG I move up my vets and rough riders, let everything else fire. I wasn't sure about the vets, but their guns needed to be close to work, and if something moved out to shoot them, I'd get to shoot back...seemed like a good trade to me.
Of the whole clump on his left flank, my first bassi shot manages to scatter the only way possible to miss everything. The second penetrates the devilfish and annihilates it, killing all the firewarriors on board. The explosion kill a stealth suit. Shoot down the other devilfish (barely), and the firewarriors dump out, pinned.
(Turn photos are all at the very end of the players' turn)
Turn 1- Tau
At this point, I think my opponent decided to go all out. He turbo-boosted his piranhas forward and detached their drones to mess with my targeting checks and block
LOS. The crisis team in the middle (by the building) blow my first basilisk up with a pen 6, which removes the vehicle and allows the hammerhead to blow the gun off the second one. So much for that plan...
Lost troops here and there to submunitions, but nothing too bad.
Turn 2
IG Continued the advance. Rough riders charged the firewarriors and cut them down when they rout (lost two in the process). Shot down one hammerhead (middle one) and stunned the other. Failed several targeting checks...that was extremely annoying. Shot down one piranha and messed up another.
Turn 2 Tau
As you can see, my right flank dissolves under the Tau attack. The crisis suits and stealth suits made easy work of them. More thinning out with the submunition from the good hammerhead.
