The first GW models I ever bought came in the Warhammer Quest game. I have fond memories of painting those guys. I was so proud of them at the time, but thinking back now I have to laugh at how bad they were.

First 40k models I ever bought were the 2nd edition Chaos Marine Tactical Squad. The one that came with only five models with bolters.

RT plastic marine box set. Painted them up dark angels. Either that or it was metal terminators and the space hulk set. I forget which 20 years later....

A friend gave me a metal lascannon marine, and let me use his thick, Apple Barrel paints to cake paint in about an inch thick layer over it .

Was pretty fantastic of him, and I've been hooked ever since!

Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Almost completely sure it was a dreadnought. A corpse in small mech was all sorts of awesome to me, especially after watching the first DoW intro.

A box of 5 Chaos Space Marines from very early 3rd Edition. I was in the model shop in town and had decided that Space Marines were the guys for me. £5 I think they were, a lot of money for a 12 year old!

"I only have some Chaos ones, will they do?" asked the shopkeeper
"Sure, they're still Space Marines!" I replied.

I painted them in Humbrol enamels in my Dad's conservatory. Now I have absolutely no recollection of what happened to them.

Funny how I can remember everything about the purchase for my first minis except where they are today!

We are winged salvation, but we are a terrible, final salvation, and our wings embrace the horizon with fire. We are the Blood Angels. To confront us is to die, and death is my remit, my reality, my unbounded domain. I have known death, and defeated it, claimed it as my own. To my cost, to my strength, death is my one gift to bestow, and I am nothing if not generous.

soitra wrote:Hey guys was thinking earlier about what got me into painting GW miniatures in the first place, looking back its amazing how cheaply i got my first models.

I cant remember how much i paid exactly but i know i got my first models from a table-top sale that we did when i was in scouts, it was a ready painted space hulk set and i managed to really mess it up painting them, with thick enamel paints i recently found the space marines and was amazed at how poorly they had been painted.

So my question is this what first got you into painting???

Edit: also if you have any pics of your first model feel free to post them, would love to see some early paintjobs

My first miniatures were a box of Grenader Magic Users set.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I believe Horus had the exact same problem!

First model was a Black Templar Emperor's Champion. I loved him, and still do (and to this day, years later, I still haven't painted him. One of my favourite models, and I'm gonna wait till my painting skills are superb before I touch him!) This was despite my first real army purchase being Tyranids a few weeks later.

(Don't worry, the Champion serves Chaos now! )
