I like the engineer but the remote is a bit, "bidi bidi" if you know what I mean. He could probably be sawn up and reposed.
The rest of the stuff is great. I don't like everything they do but I like 90% of it.
The thing that stops me getting into Infinity is the number of elite units compared to line troops involved. It comes over as more of a special forces team game than a general skirmish. But I haven't played, it, I'm just going by the figure releases.

God, Infinity minis are looking better all the time. That's some really good stuff. I think the remote looks good; it's a cute pose, not a threatening "lord of the battlefield" one, but that's fine.

A few things bug me... like some of the legs look spindly, and the pose on the missile launcher guy doesn't make him look like he's carrying a very substantial weapon. Adore the Musashi though, that *is* a sweet mini. I bet these would look gorgeous in a better color scheme.

It comes over as more of a special forces team game than a general skirmish. But I haven't played, it, I'm just going by the figure releases. I'm not sure what a special forces team game is, but the forces you skirmish with are usually trained well (they utilize a much more technical form of warfare in the future, see Ragik Hacker . A typical game will consist of 10-16 figures.

I think it's a kind of power armour. Fair enough , I guess I just like the look of really lugging a heavy weapon around. Something seems odd about carrying a 'splodey missile launcher in one hand and little stabby knife in the other. But that's nitpicking.

For now, its a toss up between AT-43 and Infinty.
I know the rules for AT-43 are above par and quite solid, but I have no idea about the Infinity rules other than a few really good reviews.
If the Infinity game is half as good as their models, then they will be twice as good as GW games.

I have the Infinity rulebook but as it's packed for moving have not had a chance to dig in deep. The production values are good. It's a solid hardback, about half as thick as WH40Kv4, full colour throughout and very consistent and characterful artwork. (The thickness is partly because Infinity uses coated stock which is thinner than the fairly rough stock used for the 40K mono pages. Also, as far as I recall, the Infinity book contains rules, b/g and army lists but no modelling advice.) UK price = £20. Everything I've heard about the rules is good except that you need a lot of terrain because people die fast when caught in the open. You can download a set of quick start rules from the Infinity web site. Scenarios look like they use about 12-15 figures a side, which is obviously much more skirimish than 40K, however the cost of the individual miniatures means if you want a selection of different troop types the cost starts to mount up, though still cheap compared to 40K. Still, there is attraction in making a force from say 20 figures as the amount of painting effort is much less than 40K. AT-43 has also had a lot of good press though the recent bad news about Rackham must put its future in some doubt. Personally I hope they will pull through. Are the AT-43 rules available as a separate book? Yes, a quick internet search reveals that they are. The box set is also supplemented with a variety of individual and squad packs and three army books are available.

Infinity is a very fast paced game where setting up and thinking ahead of time can be rewarding. As the poster said above it does require a fair bit of terrain because firing lanes can be so deadly. It rewards players for running from cover to cover and seeking out the best spot to lay down fire from. Games go pretty quick even if you are playing a demo making it possible to get a handful of games in a 1-2 hour timeslot.

The rules are more in line with Necromunda than comparable with AT-43. In my mind, Infinity and AT-43 are completely different games.
If you liked Necromunda, you will likely enjoy Infinity. There are a few game mechanics that still don't sit well with me, especially the 'cheerleading' system.
Each model adds one "Order" to your force. But all your Orders can be spent by a single model during your round. This leads to some Rambo type situations where the majority of your marines stand around mouth agape while Rambo goes on a ferocious killing spree. Common tactics seem to involve choosing a handful of awesome characters and deploying them tacticly and then hiding away a group of cheap trash characters in a difficult to reach place for no other purpose than to add orders to your force.
All forces have access to a "Warband" model that comes equipped with smoke grenades and most forces have an elite model equipped with infrared vision. The predominant tactic I see around here is throwing down a smoke grenade with your Warband model to prevent "Automatic Reactions" from the enemy and then marching a nightvision equipped model out into the open to fire indescriminantly (he has been given a HMG, right?) and without fear of return fire while the rest of your huddled force cheers over coms from their bunker. There are tactics to fight this, of course. Eliminating this spec ops guy with the visor becomes a key priority, whether you use active camoflage, assassins, or even lug EM grenades over a wall at him to short out his gear.
Anyhow, I haven't put in a dozen games yet, but that's been my impression so far.

Ah, the 'ol smoke and cheerleader act! These things work until your opponent figures out how to play the game I'm not trying to offend you Red Stripe, but these concerns pop up a lot as first posts on the forum (mine as well ), but as people play the game they abandon them and find it is utterly impractical to rely on these - even more so when using scenarios. Not every faction has access to smoke, and the models that do carry it are impetuous (which means they are hard to control and die fast); all but one faction has access to visors which negate smoke; figures in zero visibility can be targeted by direct template, suppressive fire, and indirect fire from grenade launchers; smoke only lasts for one turn (or half of one game round); throwing smoke makes it obvious where the thrust of attack will be; combat drop behind the smoke and enjoy the show; people not familiar with AROs (reaction) often forget to do more than shoot back (ie if a guy throws smoke and your reaction is to move into cover then his visor buddy steps out and sees nothing); visors are expensive. The cheerleading thing follows the same lines. You will learn to set up covering fire and suppressive fire zones to limit enemy movements and force combined orders (kinda the opposite of cheerleading) to reduce casualties; troops should use each other for support and utilize cover to maximize their AROs; 360 visor total reaction HMG - nuff said ; and again, don't always shoot back! Dodge and Prone are good! An enemy will spend all his orders on one model to kill everything you have, but this inevitably leaves that model unsupported. Combat drop a couple troops on it or use its lack of support in your active turn to destroy it and all the enemy is left with is a bunch of cheerleaders. They can make a spirit pyramid, but that's about it. Sort of the eggs in one basket deal. Anyway, I hope that helps. If you haven't played the game, this is probably very confusing!

I understand not a ton of all this, but I am intrigued by how sci-fi it is and how different from GeeDub stuff it sounds. Elements of WM with the boost thingy, but clearly a lot going on in general. Is the game I-Go-U-Go? So ... checking out the sexy models again? Nuts. - Salvage

It is in each turn there is an active and reactive player. The active player spends orders while the reactive player declares reactions which culminate in simultaneous actions expressed in face-to-face rolls. As the reactive player, you really have to pay attention and be involved in the game or you may miss your opportunities. You will be surprised how much you can accomplish as the reactive player. As the active player it is also crucial to set up your reactive turn next or the enemy will take advantage.
The mechanics are very foreign if you are used to playing the other big companies. After a decade+ of only GW, I didn't know quite what to make of my first read through the book. Aleph's deprogramming took a while, but finally my Comlog is fully integrated into Maya! (Sorry, nerdy Infinity joke)

There is an awful lot to do in the game. As far as the actions a single model can take, it is much more rich than any GW game. There is a whole host of equipment and special abilities a single model can have. Aside from the smoke grenades and infrared vision mentioned earlier, there is active camouflage (think Predator) and Electromagnetic weapons that don't injure a model but destroy any advanced electronic gear he uses. Some models can disguise themselves as the enemy and some can use air support to drop in behind enemy lines.
There is also computer hacking which involves a sort of wi-fi network that models can use to interface with enemy equipment such as Mechs (which are called TAGs) and allows you to field remote controlled robots. You can also hack the enemy's power-armored troops to frustrate their movement. Hackers can also protect their comrades from this infowar by using an Automatic Reaction Order to oppose the enemy in cyberspace and potentially ruin their hacking device or kill them with biofeedback.
It is an I-Go-U-Go format game. However, in certain situations, the "Reactive" player may actually perform more actions than the "Active" player, specifically when the active player exposes one of his units to several of the reactive player's units.
It is a much more anime or shadowrun kind of setting. That's the kind of equipment and activities your characters are capable of. It's more about stalking about and hunting your prey than extended firefights across a barren no-man's land like we have in GW games.
And no offense taken Markheim, I freely admit my noob-level knowledge. Regardless of my current misgivings about the game, it is a huge breath of fresh air and the models are fantastic. Alot of people praise the production value of the rulebook as well. While it is lovely with great color art throughout, the text is clearly a translation as some of the grammar and sentence structure is off. Also, some units receive very very brief entries which leave you at a loss on what to expect from that unit or what it's place in the fiction is supposed to be. I would have also prefered that the descriptive "fluff" and the technical statistics of the units were in the same place instead of the way they are separated out, now.
I don't want to sound like I'm coming down on the game, I really do enjoy it, I just wanted to make note of some of the issues I've had with it.
