The title says it all, I want to seal my models and I am unsure whether I should put the static grass on the base before
or after the seal shower.

I seal them after.

I seal it after so it doesn't rub off os easy.

ok, then afterwards...I just thought the grass may glue together or anything like that.

After the sealant

Whenever I used GW spray sealant (any sealant in fact, after I put on the static grass the grass would clump and get little dried droplets of varnish on them.

For the last couple of years I'll finish the model bar the grass and then varnish. Then I put on static grass/ reeds and go over the static grass with very thinned (basically thinner than milk with no clumps) PVA glue (I believe the US calls it woood glue). The PVA glue stops the static grass rubbing off but dries invisible so you would never know it was there.

Never seen that happen once! Do you put on a super heavy coat?

I too seal after putting on the static grass and I've never had any issues as WG describes (and I use Citadel spary sealeant). I find that it helps keep the static grass in place. Otherwise over time the glue starts to wear out and the static grass begins to fall off (in my experience).

Interesting, I use the GW coat ('ard coat it's called IIRC, the dull one), I think I will try the "after" shot and then look if something strange happens.

I too used the Citadel 'ard coat and you can see there are no issues.

 

 

I never get static grass to stand up, it always looks mowed. Generally I just use flock instead. Its simple mundane and ubiquitous. however I do believe that a base should be minimally decorated or it looks busy and detracts from the models. Only large bases or select characters get any features at all except flock or sand.

I glue on and paint the sand & rocks first, then use a sealer, then add grass after. I just use little bits of grass here and there. I also always kinda felt a busy base can take away from the figure itself which is what you should be looking at, unless it's a big model or a diorama

also I pretty much only seal metal stuff. I've never had any problems with paint coming off at all on plastics. Even some of my earlier unsealed metal stuff still holds up well.

If I get the USB-cable for my Camera I will make some pics and post them here. Then we can discuss on the "living" object.

what do you store your static grass in? if it's a plastic container or plastic bag, rub your feet on the carpet a few times, pick it up, give it a few good shakes and then add it to your base. (you really don't need to rub your feet on the carpet, but i added that in there just incase you grab something metallic that is grounded.  heheh).. 

shaking it in the container should get the static going.  hope that helps.
