A very simple but striking color scheme. I like it a lot.

Mmmm, lots of subtlety there. I like the way the black is warm too. Also the subtle use of the yellow/purple color combo without making your model yellow and purple is appreciated. On an odd note, the model's head is reminding me a bit of one of Matt Groening's bunnys.

Good job!

Right behind you...

Very nice scheme and modelling. Is your whole army as nicely done? Got any pics of it?

Please don't remind me. I HATE that head. I actually love the eyes, and was sorta focused on them until I got it done, and then realized that I really do hate the damn head.

I have a few others for this army, but it's still a little under halfway done. I'll try to take some pics of those guys.

It looks great! The pink as a contrast to the grey and grown looks awesome. Oh, and if you don't like the "bunny ears" you could always chop 'em off...

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

The way I will be doing my carnies is to take the spore emitting carapace section (it looks good and isnt useful for anything else) and use the large holes to mount roach antenna, sprouting straight up about two inches then bent at a sharp angle forward and gently curved.
That is my idea of Bs3.

At least that is how I will be modelling my gunfex. I will be using standard Bs3 heads for my elite carnies.

What I really hate about the dakkafex are thhe four guns, this is primarily why I will be giving each a pair of scything talons, on the forward arm sockets pointing over and forward. The other reason to do this is for a sense of fairness. I am considering using the deathspitters for my devourers and simply mounting the devourer 'firing cones' to the front. This should make the guns look suitably big.

No matter how good this paintjob is, I think the arms look very sucky. Ironic for one of the mostfeared units in the game.

Phryxis: Can you please tell me your paint palette and order, this is so subtly shaded and I would like to know just how you did it.

Orlanth:

The body isn't really all that fancy, it's black spray primer, a drybrush of Adeptus Battlegrey, then a highlight of Vallejo Cold Grey, which I think is Codex Grey in GW speak.

The carapace is Vallejo Black, through Charred Brown, to Beasty Brown. I think that's Scorched Brown and Bestial Brown in GW.

One thing I found out (the hard way) is that it's best to paint black by hand over the primer. The primer is a bit rougher finish than the paint will be, and you'll end up with a different finish on the black portions of the carapce even after a primer coat. I had to spray the crap out of another Fex I didn't do this on, and he ended up glossier than I wanted.

The actual technique on the carapace isn't very sophisticated. It's just layering, with five stages. Black, then Charred Brown/Black mix (I think about 4/1), then Charred Brown, then Charred Brown/Beasty Brown (I think 1/1), then finally Beasty.

This is one of the big reasons I used Vallejo, the droppers let you mix pretty accurately, using the drop count to get the ratio. I actually don't know exactly what my ratios are, I should have written them down... I'll probably be able to match them off the palette, and I don't think an exact match is critical.

I put the highlights on in sorta jagged edged layers. If you had the model in front of you, it's pretty clear that it's just simple layering, but it looks a bit smoother in this photo (and looks pretty smooth from anything over 6" away). Any appearance of smoothness comes from the jagged edges of the layers, and from the fact that the colors are pretty close together to start with.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I always write down my colour palettes, this way I can recreate the effect later. Sometimes years later. i have a half Painted High Elf army ( I am a notorious 'tinman') getting down to painting every so often, there is one unit of speasrelves I was working on six months ago, then the last time before that was two years ago. It was good to have the palette.

Maybe if I got down to actually finishing an army I might not need the notes so much, but evwen those armies I do get down and do take several sessions - the fastest I have painted an army is a week and the notes are still handy.

Phryxis: Your nids are very similar to how I envisage doing mine, the flesh identical the carapace not too different. I want black shiny insectiod carapace with a hint of purple and/or dark blue throughout, the body to be the grey you have with the same purple pink.
Any idea on how I should go about this?
Also I want a semi-shiny nid army for insectoid/lizard skin effects and have considered dipping, any ideas of precolouring and what coliour dip I should want?
Thankyou.
