Subject: In a moment of weakness I ordered the Space Marine Battle Company

Hello everyone. Overcome by miniature lust, I just ordered the Space Marine Battle Company. Rather than repent at this impulsive decision, I have decided to treat it as an opportunity to be grasped with determination and vigour. The idea of having my very own Space Marine company still spurs me on. The Battle Company contains 109 Space Marines and 9 tanks. Painting all this in the traditional assembly-batch painting-start again way will probably be too much for me. I intend, therefore, to paint the components on the sprues after filing away the worst of the flash , then clip them off, assemble the Space Marines and go back and tidy up all the areas where the components met the sprues. The scheme will be simple and based around Foundation paints. Has anyone tried doing this, and is it feasible? I remember hearing it mentioned way back in the RTB01 days. Also, has anyone else got/ordered the Battle Company, and how do they intend to turn it into a host of awesome space dudes? Tnks for any insights, Aescarion

I don't think there's anything beneficial to achieve by painting them on the sprues! Hammer is doing the same, and blogging about it at the Dakka Modeling Blogs forum. It's a crazy undertaking. He has given himself until next summer, same as for my TWAR and Scarab for Scarab Eldar 2. Lets see how it goes.

I really wanted to order one, but I procrastinated and missed out. When I did my BT army, I thought about painting on the sprue; but after looking at it, it's way too much touch up and detail missed to make it worth your time. I think finding a base spray or priming/airbrushing base coat down would be much more time effective.

I agree with Migs that they will be as fast and look better if you paint them assembled.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Maybe paint the bodies, legs and heads assembled but the arms and guns on the sprue?
That's a really great deal. I'm assuming it comes with the plastic devs with the various weapons options.

Another vote for painting assembeld. I tried it with Shoota Boys and it was a really time expensive.

As Migsula said, I'm also doing a SM battle company. I've already reserved a Battle Company box at the local store and plan getting it as soon as they have it (13th Oct?). This is a big undertaking and I have reserved lots of time for it. I plan to build one squad each month and do several vehicles in addition to the squads as time permits. I see no advantage in painting stuff in the sprues. Sound rather complicated to me. And it stops you from doing any conversions too! Anyway, however you decide to do this, good luck on your endeavour!

Ha, I must be getting cynical, because the first thing I thought when I read the OP was "viral marketing".
