Well, I just finished my first large(ish) Forge World model, (an Eldar Phoenix) and really love it. For my next purchase, I was looking at some of the other Flyers that are available.  Does anyone have any WIP pics or just general info about the following models?

  • Imperial Lightning
  • Imperial Thunderbolt
  • Ork Fighta
  • Ork Fighta Bomma

Mainly, I'm looking for pics of the unassembled kits, quality of casts, and ease of assembly.

Also, would anyone be interested in a blog/site which posts this kind of info?  Just a general database type of thing which will help people who want to buy Forge World models make the right choice. I was thinking of the following format:

  1. Images of Model Components, including a scale pic for reference
  2. Comments on model quality (warpage, difficult joins, etc...)
  3. Assembly tips and tricks (best places to pin, easy to miss areas to scrub, etc...)
  4. Comments on actual game performance/points worth

You know, that sort of thing... I shoulda taken pics of my unbuilt Phoenix... dang...

Thanks,

Jim

Such a blog/site would be awesome, actually.
Im not of much use beyond comments on the Valkyrie and dreads, but I'll root from the sidelines ^^

A web page like you are describing would be truely awesome.

I'm looking to buy a couple of kits and any help in their assembly (Especially pinning for titans) would be helpful.

I've built three T-bolts just recently.

Sadly, my digital cam crapped out on me, so no pics.

What I can tell you is this and this comes from my Maruader work too:

The wings will be bent

The Engine nacells will be wonky, and may or may not require bending and filling. Use Elmers Paintable Wood fill. It fills in gaps beautifully, it's very easy to clean off the model, you can trim it once it's cured, and painting it is no problem.

What I recommend for all FW stuff:

If it's got tabs for you to stick things together: cut the damn things off and eyeball it. They're gonna be either half-filled or mis-aligned.

Warm water after it's built to saok the wings in so you can bend them into the shape you want. If you do it before, it's gonna be a crap shoot.

Wash all your parts. Then wash them again. Scrub both times.

Then wash it for all the parts you missed Especially after you primer it and the damn primer won't stick

As for the titan....

I do have some pics of that, and my advice stays the same. The friggin toes are a @#$@#$@#ing nightmare. Cut off the tab bits that you're supposed to stick into the foot proper and eyeball it. If they're a few milimetres off you won't notice. Also, I hope you love fine detail work: the pistons will kill you.3 per front toe, 5 per ankle, 2 per leg, 3 per hip.

I've not had to pin anything, just proper sanding and lots of swearing will get anything to stick. For the arms, I'll be using rare earth magnets to get them to swivel around and so they can pop on and off for transport.

General FW tools I recommend:

Clamps to hold the stuff in place (especially for Tbolts, this will help with the fuselage)

Proper 2 stage respirator mask. Resin dust is a *female dog*.

Good hobby saw and dremel tool.

Good understanding of how models go together. The Tbolts didn't come with instructions (nor the maruader). The Titan DOES come with instructions, so they're getting better.

Any more specific questions, please ask. I've got a lot of scars and grey hairs from FW stuff in the past 5 months

Good info, Mithrax, I appreciate it. The only things really warped on my Phoenix were the pulse laser, and one of the fins, but a few seconds under the kitchen tap cleared that right up. The underside was definately a nightmare when it came to scrubbing, I washed it 3 times and still had issues with some parts. Something that did help was a light coat of matte sealer, which seemed to give the paint something to stick to.

I'm going to research a good blog host (by 'good' I mean one that my work does not block...), and start a list of models I'd like to start with for the site. I'll post here (or maybe in the discussion section, wherever Yak thinks is best) when I'm ready to solicit volunteers.

Oh, I forgot to add: I've not painted my Tbolts yet, and one of them isn't fully assembled. I'll get a new cam tonight, and take a few pics.

I may actually be putting together another T-bolt and a Marauder destroyer soon, so I'll remember to take some pictures of the process.

Mithrax, that's exactly the sort of thing I was talking about. Beautifully done.
Now I want a Marauder... >sigh<

I'd love to see a FW kit info site too. Are you going to make one? Do you need contributors?

Ok, I've decided on using blogspot.com, even though it's blocked at work...

For now, this is what I have.

Site title:  Cypra Mundi
Address:  cypramundi.blogspot.com

There's pretty much nothing there yet, so if you have content, email it to me at:  cypramundi@insightbb.com
I'll try to get stuff up as fast as I can. I'll post a 'wanted' list of models I'd like to start the site with, and I know of some people on other sites that have posted detailed Forge World info, so I'll contact them and ask if I can use their content as well.

As I learn more about how to use blogspot, I'll start fleshing everything out.

Thanks!

Jim
