Subject: "Codex: Orbital Assault' rumors...
|
 |
Lieutenant General
|
... from Bell of Lost Souls Hot off the presses, we hear from Warseer and a couple of other sources on what may be in store for next summer. Sources say GW is planning a "Codex: Orbital Assault" or something along those lines. It will focus on operations involving deep-striking, and other forms of high speed orbital to surface insertion (something oddly lacking in detail in Apocalypse). That may also tie into some other rumors we've been hearing about potential releases for next summer that would make sense such as: - Plastic Drop pods
- Plastic Thunderhawk (this one won't die down)
- Plastic IG Stormtroopers
- Plastic Valkyrie (this one seems the most unlikely)
- Ork Stormboys
The rules are supposed to not focus exclusively on specific races, but could give all new uses to things such as Swooping Hawks, Assault Marines, Gargoyles, and the like. It is supposed to be a focused campaign with specific protagonists and antagonists who are currently unknown.
Although I'm taking this rumor with a huge grain of salt, I would love to see a plastic Valkyrie and plastic stormtroopers.

I was just reading that on Warseer, they're calling it 40K Dropzone over there. I think it could be a cool expansion/codex if done right. Sure would be nice to finally get plastic drop pods. A plastic vaklyrie or thunderhawk would be cool too.
I kinda like the idea of campaigns that could link BFG games with 40K better than their boarding action idea

I would sell what is left of my soul for plastic Valkyries. My british para light inf force would be well on it's way.
An interesting concept for a codex.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die. |

thats what i thought too. i dont think that there would be to much difrent from normal 40k or apoc, with a lot of deep strikeing and flyers. we'll have to keep an eye on this

There's been talk about greatcoat wearing Guardsmen (to represent Terrax, Krieg, Valhalla, Tallarn with headswaps) for quite awhile now. I could see the new Stormtroopers being intended to fit in with those.

When Jervis was at Adepticon he was trying to explain the concept of "expansions" and the only one he could talk about at the time was "cities of death" (since Apoc hadn't been announced yet).
When I asked him in the seminar if he could give some examples of other possible expansion types that would produce new models the one he brought up (after making sure we knew he was only talking theoretically) was an orbital drop expansion with a big plastic turbo-laser battery piece of scenery.
My only point with this story is that Jervis is ridiculously close-lipped about giving away information beyond the 3 month window, so unless this is an idea that they never thought they'd go with (and have since changed their mind) I can't believe he would have mentioned it to us.
But I hope I'm wrong, cause it sounds like a cool idea.

I like Campaign based expansions. Releases and rules for everybody!
They need to decide right away whether their rules are going to be "Tourney Legal" since that's what's important to some folks. People still play Cities of Death, but I know some are bummed from that one Chaos campaign expansion with the different army lists.

At Adepticon, Jervis through out a few different ideas. I think boarding actions and/or warfare in the vacumn of space was mentioned. I'd guess that Codex: Dropzone wasn't on the radar and was just an 'idea' at the time, so he felt 'free' to talk about it. I'm all for it. I think CoD and Apoc are two of the best expansions for 40k. It also gives them a way to address tourney-players (core rules) and hobbyists/veterans (CoD/Apoc) within the same basic framework of rules but without worrying about how unbalancing a Baneblade is at 1500 points. It also seems like they're going with Special Characters to help flesh out some of the optional army lists - like Deathwing and Ravenwing.
I've said it before, and 2 of my 4 Team Tourney games felt like they owed more to army selection than tactics in wins/losses (being on both sides of getting clobbered and doing the clobbering). I know that Jervis's changes to 40k aren't universally popular, but after hearing him talk Sunday morning at Adepticon, I had some faith that they were moving the game in a postive direction and it has kept me interested in the game.

They need to decide right away whether their rules are going to be "Tourney Legal" since that's what's important to some folks. People still play Cities of Death, but I know some are bummed from that one Chaos campaign expansion with the different army lists. That is something they've completely locked down: The core rules are the core rules which are the basis for tournaments, while any expansions are expansions and are only used in games where you want to play with those expansions. Of course, any tournament organizer is still free to include expansions in their tournament if they want, but that's totally up to them. GW will not be doing any more expansions that include variant army lists for the exact reason you illustrated. They feel they cannot indefinitely support all of these niche lists they've released and eventually players (rightly so) start screaming that the army they built is no longer supported. The current process of eliminating variant lists is very painful for many players who've taken the time to make these armies but there really is little choice. . .ultimately those lists had to either blossom into full army lists or go the way of the dodo; it was just a matter of time.

Since drop pods and (if you want to push things) Thunder hawks are the only things left for Marines it would make perfect sense for GW to pursue this.

Don't forget the plastic Space Marine Fortress Monastery, with trap door in the throne room. The rumors do make sense, but I wonder how they will explain something like orks in a deep space battle, where the vacuum of space is something that orks aren't necessarily geared for. Force Fields perhaps? It will be intteresting to watch what develops.

Force Fields perhaps? It will be intteresting to watch what develops. This expansion is all about Orbital landings rather than Deep Space fighting. There has long been a rumored Deep Space/Space Hulk expansion (it was mentioned in WD even by Andy Chambers back in the day) but it has never materialized. This expansion would appear to be focused on battles still fought on the ground but with all manner of orbital landers, from Drop Pods to Thunderhawks to (presumably) such things as Ork Rokks and Tyranid Mycetic Spores. And as for Orks fighting in the void, the good old fluff for Orks was always that they would project a force field around their ships and that's how they contained the atmosphere in 'em. Then they'd just 'tellyport' troops aboard other ships or just 'ram' their ships into enemy ships (or launch some sort of crude boarding craft, I'd imagine). I too would love to see an official updating of Ork void tactics. I don't know how much nitty-gritty details were presented in BFG on the subject. . .perhaps I should try to find out.
