The Storm of Chaos armies are not particuarly well balanced and some are outright broken (Lothern Sea Guard with Sea Lord) However, each list is slowly obsoleted as the new army book is released. These are all 6th ed lists. I believe that only the Dwarf Slayer list is legal after the release of the updated army book and that only by divine intervention from high level GW people. The Orc and Empire lists are now gone, the Sea Guard will go when the new HE book comes out, followed by the Sylvanian army when VC comes out. The Cult of Slaanesh for DE could last quite a whle because Dark Elves/Eldar seem to be right at the bottom of GW's barrel. Overall, I would not worry about the Sylvanian army. Things will change greatly with the new VC book.

The Sylvanian list will most likely go away early next year when the VC army book is redone.....the biggest problem w/ that old list(although it seemed really cool) you typically only had 3 markers at bound power lvl 4. So even w/ only modest magic defense you could completely shut them down from summoning anything else.
It's not a terribly hard battle for Wood Elves depending on what your running. Dryads in the flank w/ a more solid unit up front(or Treeman in the flank and dryads up front) will eat most, if not all, of there units. You can stay out of charge range most of the game and shoot the crap out of them if you'd prefer to go that right. Only "scary" unit is the dark knights(templars) but they are rare. He should have a couple of fast units that can charge you quickly, but should be able to be killed easily if charging w/ out support.

Malfred is playing at about 1250 points, so there will be two markers. At this level, magic defense is much weaker and the effects of summoning is correspondingly greater.

I dont know if i would call two bound lvl 4 spells vs two dispel dice a powerful magic phase... Below 2000 pts the sylvanian army suffers greatly.
Most of the things in the wood elf army are good vs sylvanian with all that immune to psycology and fast movement
Sylvanians have a couple fast units, as long as those die its all good (and only one cav unit for sylvanians)

Exactly....one single branchwraith w/ cluster of radiance would give 3 dispel dice compared to 2 bound lvl 4 spells. Make that branchwraith lvl 1 and your looking at 4 dispel dice to 2 spells at lvl 4. In no way is that hard to beat w/ that setup that will cost you 140pts. The few fast units that Sylvanians have(bat swarms, dire wolves and possibly the rare choice) can be shot up or tied up w/ Dryads easily enough and be flanked while picking off the more scary slow shambling hordes

Treat them as any other army, just assume they will hold on all charges (cause they will)
Fear shouldnt be much of a problem for elves the magic shouldnt be much of a problem (only half get off, no von dance...)
O, and treat any char as death incarnat (cause they are)

And how is he getting a lvl 4 mage in 1250?
I think we are talking about 2000+ in which case the VC will have a lvl 3 caster and 4 bound spells (three tokens + book). That calls for 4 dice and 2-4 scrolls to stop most of it.

and level 4 necromancer or whatever it was.

Ummm the best he should have gotten would be a lvl 3 Necromancer from his Vampire Lord not a Necromancer so that would be 3 grave markers at bound lvl 4 which is beatable, even more so at 1250
|

It was 2k, Level 4 wizard, Calaingor's , dispel Noble with BSB, annoyance of netlings, sword of might Wild Rider noble (forget what he had) Glade Riders, musician Wild Riders, standard Glade Guard x11 Glade Gurad x12 minimum Dryads Wardancers, 10 with bladesinger Whatever I had was in Waywatchers (maybe 8) Eternal Guard with full command, 19 I think that's it. My magic was too weak. There's a thread in Battle Reports about the game. Here's a link to the actual blog.

If calaingor's is the stupid thing that lets you reroll dispell dice you have more than enough dispell power. Man i hate that thing.
It lets you throw one die at each bound spell and still have a die left over to throw at the book of arcan or the staff (cant remember name) when it appears (save scroll for the first critical van dance). This will drastically limit his magic phase but not stop it entirly.
Part of the problem is that you have little that will really chop through UD units and not enough units that can pin them in place. How do you normally fare against regular UD armies?
Eternal guard are decent against UD as their number of attacks means they will be unlikly to wiff their rolls but they arent going to break a unit of skeletons any time soon. Also, the BSB isnt particularly usefull against UD, either you win or you break...
The only thing you can do is attempt to engague blocks in the front and flank and hope to meatgrinder them before support arrives. Fortuntally wood elves are a great army at this.
Some notes from your battle report.
One, sylvanian lists cannot have necromancers. End of story. Their only magic is the grave markers and the general. When wardancers charge one block, wipe it out, and overrun into another block they can chose the same dance for both fights, even though they are back to back. It is subtle but is there in the rules.
Dont bother shooting the black coach (hard as hell to damage) or the zombies (no real effect). Shoot everything at the knights, wolves, and other flankers that cant be raised. They are going to be your worst nightmare this game and the unit you are most likely to hurt (still prety unlikly). Dire wolves are also a prety good target as they dont get resed very much and are quite annoying, same goes for bats.
A lone mage, deep in the forest is a hard thing to kill. A mage in a unit of archers - easy to kill.
I would deploy the eternal guard wide on one flank and everything else there to help them once they get into combat. Wild riders towards the middle so that if units go for the eternal guard the wild riders can flank. Glade riders to the flank of the wild riders so that if units try for the wild riders the glade riders can flank and between the two cav units crush zombies. The skirmishing killers go in between to expoint flanks that appear because of the other units. If no such flanks appear then either the wild riders or the eternal guard should be able to get a flank (he cant have that many units...)
