Well, the kroot mercinary list has always interested me.(the one in chapter approved 04).  Im thinking about making a 2000-3000 point list for pure fun play, since it isnt that good without terrain.  But it might be fun to try, was thinking if i would stand a chance using it.  At the very least, i can add some of whatever i have to my other armies.  That and the conversions in the army could be fun.  Anyone think it could be a decent army, at least for fun?  Just wondering your thoughts on it.

I would be very, very, very wary of starting a new army based on a Chapter Approved army list.

GW has made it pretty darn clear that all such lists are essentially being phased out. So unless GW decides that Kroot Mercs are worthy of their own codex (highly unlikely) you will not be seeing any further support for the Kroot Merc army list in the future.

Of course, the army list is still mostly playable as is (even in its 3rd edition glory). So if you're not a big tournament afficianado and if the people you play with like the idea of fighting against Kroot Mercs I would consider it.

I would just suggest making plans as how you can play the army using the 'counts as' rule for tournaments as eventually all tournaments may stop using the army (say, perhaps when a 5th edition rules set is released).

Its more of a "for fun" thing.  I dont play in tornements much, and when i do ill use my templar.  I was just wondering if i has a chance in a normal casual game, therefor worth getting.

It has the ability to infiltrate every model and then have them move an extra D6" before the game begins through 'Blood of the Stalker'. That easily allows a whole bunch of devestating first turn charges.

That means if you play with infiltration all the time and you play with plenty of terrain (especially forests, as Kroot get bonus rules for forests) then the Kroot can do amazing things, way more then "just a chance".

That said, Kroot have very very few anti-tank weapons, and they are all either used in CC or have a very short range (melta guns). That means even with the nasty abilities I listed above they will alway struggle against mech armies, especially skimmer mech armies.

So in short:

Kroot Mercs can be deadly if the table has a fair amount of (forest) terrain and you are using the infiltration special rule and your opponent isn't taking a heavily mechanized force.

In an infiltrate mission they are very powerful. They go first most of the time and get first turn charge with almost everything. A unit of the calvary would be a way to get into combat quick with out infiltrate.

Yea, i was seeing anti-tank being a problem. Agaisnt a lot of tanks all my hopes goes with my vulture squad+shaper councile+master shaper, all going around with melta guns. Thats a total of 6 guns, in a 25 man unit that gets 12 inches per turn movement, and can infiltrate. But still not happy that hopes of my army rides on a single squad against a mech heavy army. I can see a monolith being really, really, really annoying agaisnt me. Well, i might start some. Might start it i guess, when i have some cash.

I've heard that giving your Shapers eviscerators is the way to go.  I've also heard that the various Forge World models add a whole new dimension to the army.

You could always model a Tau army as a Kroot army. Lacks flavour but its legal.

You already have access to Kroot, Hounds and Krootox with the Tau list.
Use Vespid rules for Vultures

You have to take a Crisis HQ and 1 Squad of Fire Warriors. Model them to be Kroot with Different Weapons/Armour. Not the most competitive but you can have a lot of models on the table.
