Subject: Plague Marine List, some basic questions

I've read the new chaos book, finally, and I'm going to run the following army. I have all the models bar Typhus (I used to run a daemon prince, but I'm not interested in doing it anymore) and the predator. HQ: Typhus, Herald of Nurgle 225 Elites: 3 Chosen Terminators with Aspiring Champion: 100 Power fist 10 2 Combi Weapon 10 Reaper Autocannon 25 Icon 5 (150) 3 Chosen Terminators with Aspiring Champion: 100 Power fist 10 2 Combi Weapon 10 Reaper Autocannon 25 Icon 5 (150) Troops: 10 Plague Marines with Aspiring Champion and Icon: 250 Power Fist: 25 2 Plasma guns 30 Rhino 35 Daemonic Possesion: 20 360 10 Plague Marines with Aspiring Champion and Icon: 250 Power Fist: 25 2 Flamers 10 Rhino 35 Daemonic Possesion: 20 340 7 Lesser Daemons: 91 Heavy Support: Chaos Predator with Lascannon turret and sponsons: 165 Daemonic Possession: 20 Total: 1501, 6 scoring units, 3 deepstriking units, all units have some level of tank hunting/infantry killing/big monster decking ability, and it's damn mobile and really, really really tough. Now, my questions: Is Typhus worth it? He seems pretty expensive, but also seems like he'd be awesome at killing tough beasties (Winds of Chaos and Force Weapon) and really blood hard to kill (Termie armour and FNP). And he's no slouch in combat either. I love the model, and will probably assemble a small Gothic fleet themed around him if I decide to run him. Combi weapons: My termies have flamers and meltas. I'm not bothered buying any new models to change that load out, but what do you think about configurations: Should the meltas both go in the same squad and then the flamers in another, or spread them evenly to allow for more flexibility? Lesser Daemons: Yeah, a hangover from last Edition. Should I consider dropping them so I can purchase and paint a Greater Daemon (Mmm, Great Unclean One), or are they better? Squads: Are the ten strong squads too beefy? I like big squads, and with the new FNP rule being added they are gonna be really hard to shift off of anything they sit on. Should I swap out the Flamers for more Plasma, or some Meltas? Any other comments?

For an HQ It?s really hard to beat a winged DP with mark of Nurgle (150, and the T6 really helps him against S4 - 7 guns and attacks), optionally with psychic powers (Warp Time is very handy, as is Wind of Chaos). If you don?t want to go that route, probably use either a flying sorcerer or lord. Lord with fist or daemon weapon, or sorcerer with Wind of Chaos- it?s always nice to flame a squad and allow no saves; if you can?t score yourself, make your opponent?s units non scoring!
Typhus I am not sold on, and don?t expect to be sold on. He?s pricey, non-scoring and doesn?t move fast. This pretty much makes him a non-starter in my book unless you?ve got a brutal list (which you don?t) and are just trying to tone it down and be fluffy. That said, he?s not completely hopeless if you?re Deep Striking him in with a couple of squads of termies for support.
The termies are cool. Remember that they?re not actually chosen any more. Calling them chosen will soon start to confuse new players, and even experienced guys who don?t play chaos themselves. As for the guns, definitely put like with like. You?re only getting one shot with the things. You want to double it up to make sure it does something. No use dropping right next to a tank and then missing with your only melta shot. If you have 2 combi meltas in the squad you have 1/9 chance of missing with both as opposed to 1/3 chance of missing with a single shot.
With the plague marines, I think I?d rather field eight than ten in a rhino. Eight?s a good strength for an assault unit, and FNP multiplies it a bit. You don?t need a full ten men for the second special weapon, which is one of their advantages over regular CSM. Also, I think you?ll do better with two plasmas or two meltas instead of two flamers. I think every squad should really have a shooting attack which can pop a tank as well, in case of things like skimmers and fast-moving vehicles which your fists will struggle to hit. meltas are nice for variety and because they can shoot them before assaulting. Plasma is just solid all the way around, and gets even better with FNP.
For the pred, I like it, but I think the current pricing scheme and the metagame favors the twin-las turret with HB sponsons better. You also save 30pts.
Call me crazy, but I like the lesser daemons. They?re inexpensive scoring units, and they show up and add more numbers to assault at several possible points. The big problem is if you play escalation. If you don?t have an icon on the table on turn 2 and the daemons make their reserve roll, they count as destroyed. With your present list, they don?t really fit unless you just don?t play escalation. To get good use out of a greater, you want to build in a couple of non-critical aspiring champs who don?t have a lot of expensive gear. It would stink if a plague marine squad lost a 40pt guy and their only Fist. In this list the best place to add a champ would be in the terminator squads, but you run into the same problem about possibly not having an icon on the board on turn 2, unless you walk your terminators in escalation, which kind of sucks. In general, I think you need at least one (preferably two) squad(s) of infiltrating chosen to make lesser or greater daemons a really good investment.
If you cut the lessers, the las sponsons (down to HB), and four plague marines, you save 201pts. That?s pretty sizeable. You save even more (approx 75-50) if you change out Typhus for one of the characters I recommended. With those points you could add a third (maybe walking?) plague marine or marked CSM squad, or maybe a small squad of raptors, or a squad of havocs, or a second predator. Any of which would be a big help (though I favor the havocs or pred).

Thanks a lot! I'll mull over that over the weekend. I was considering dropping possession on all the vehicles (cos I just noticed it drops the BS) and taking a Land Raider in place of the predator. Then Typhus and his squad could sit pretty in it, trundling towards the enemy happily.
Yeah the greater daemon needing to pop a champion makes him a bit bleh. I want to paint a great unlcean one, so eventually I'll probably get him. I'll swap out the flamers for meltas as you suggested, it makes sense. I've never played with Escalation. Must go read up about it. I actually forgot that daemon princes were immune to Instant death now too, I had horrible memories of a Gaelcon tournement where he got nailed on turn one in two of my three games by an Eldar D cannon and a Railgun shot. Yuck. He never made it to combat. I wish they'd sell those models with wings though, and Hive Tyrants. It's like the most popular way to build them...(I could proxy my balrog in test games.)

I like your list, i'm a fan of nurgle.
the greater daemons don't suck nearly as many points as they did in he previous codex, and even if they kill a 50 pt champ that's still a 150 pt monster. Worth it IMO.
Good point about the wings, how do most folks around here model their wings anyway (got a daemon prince with wings and don't know how to model them)

Cheers Teh K42.
I've altered my list slightly. Now its: Typhus 225
3 Terminators with Combi Meltas, Power Fist and a Reaper Autocannon 135
3 Terminators Power Fist and Reaper Autocannon, Personal Icon 140
5 Chosen with Meltaguns and Icon 145 (Sadly not enough points for an icon of Nurgle. Dangit.)
8 Plague Marines with Champion, Power Fist, 2 Plasma Guns, Personal Icon and Rhino Daemonic Possession 289
8 Plague Marines with Champion, Power Fist, 2 Melta Guns, Personal Icon and Rhino Daemonic Possession 279
5 Lesser Daemons 65
Land Raider, 220
Hmmm. The points don't quite add up bt I don't have my codex to hand. Will edit it later when I find out where the mistake is.
The Chosen give an extra footslogging Icon that can dish out some serious antitank/anti-MEQ fire. I dropped the Icon from the Terminator squad that Typhus would be in because he already has one. Dropped the champions because the extra attack didn't seem worth it. What do you think? I reckon it's pretty balanced, Skimmers might give me some fits but I'm pretty sure I could handle a lot of different by builds.

I am not a fan of the land raider, try to get a nurgle demon prince in the list rather than typhus and replace lesser demons. with those points freed up try to get another mechanized marine squad, and some long range fire support, maybe a dread.
