Looking at the model on the Apocalypse data sheet has certainly inspired me to build one myself...

Though I must admit to now needing help on finding some of the pieces!

What is everyone using for the Defense Laser itself?

What is a good source for the laser housing dome?

And the larger half-dome that is used as a platform for the Defense Laser?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

just by the looks
the defence laser looks like a "gardena" style garden sprayer
the housing looks like a few bicycle chainrings
hope that gives you a start

Good call on the Defense Laser identity! I'll have to take a look in the Gardening Section and see what they've got...

Thanks!

Isn't there a Star Wars Ion Cannon model anywhere? That was the first idea that came to my mind.

But sorry, nothing useful to add...

Buy a globe map. Use the globe for the defense laser and the 1/2 ring part for the Necron pylon

For the gun you could try and find some old armourcast models

Some toy laser guns would make cheap and easy massive defense lasers.

There's also a Star Wars Death Star model in production that would make an interesting basis.

Another good point... I'll check the Toy Aisle while I'm there checking the Gardening Section...

Thanks guys!

For the sphere, I went to the pet store and picked up a 5 inch 'Hamster ball' for $4. It is a plastic sphere with nice making already on it.

If you are in the US, the dollar stores have lots of cheezy sci-fi guns about that size, or you could opt for a star wars blaster.

I took a spare small fish bowl / decorative centerpiece. It's more or less a sphere with a ruffled lip along the top that I'm flipping upside down, and cutting up an old Ethernet cable to make power wires coming from under the ruffles in bundles. The bottom of the bowl is flat, so I took the top ring off a couple Styrofoam cups to make a railing and am calling it a command deck. For the barrel of the cannon, I took two different sized prescription medicine containers, put them bottom to bottom but offset so their edges line up at one point (which I oriented so it's the 'top' of the barrel), and base coated the whole thing with grey.

The bowl will sit on top of a cd spindle case, with the top cover upside down and the base of the spindle right side up on top of it. With this particular spindle the 'teeth' that would normally lock the top into the bottom act as braces so the two can spin freely of each other, without sliding around loosely. The whole thing is sitting on top of a Styrofoam piece that with a little cutting looked about right for a fortress. Tack on a couple foam cups with soda cans torn in half and I've got platforms for the auto-cannons.

Thus far it's been entirely cheap stuff I had laying around. Through experimentation I discovered that both aerosol spray and super glue eat through Styrofoam. I've more or less had to paint the entire thing in Elmer's glue before I could spray paint it. All told it's been a couple hours of scrounging and planning, and a couple hours of building and painting with glue. I'll see if I can get a couple pictures uploaded from my phone.
