Subject: Land Speeder Typhoon bits?

Executing Exarch

Okay, I've been trying to think of a more affordable (and less OTT) way of modelling Exorcists for my daydreamed about SoB army, and the Typhoon missile pods seem like a good idea (and look nice in the conversions I've seen). I've come across a confusing thing, though: the GW store lists the Typhoon bits as being metal (see here), but the War Store seems to have a plastic version in stock (see here). What's up with that? Aside from the material, are there any differences between them? If I were to buy a complete Land Speeder Typhoon kit from the current range, which would I be receiving?

The plastic bits are from the Dark Angels accessory sprue. The standard typhoon bits are metal. The metal ones are longer front to back and have a skull with wing emblem. The plastic ones are are plain.

Great, that's what the War Store organisation led me to believe, but it seemed a little weird. So, do you know if there are any differences at all between the designs (size, iconography, etc.)?

Actually they're about the same size. I was looking at an unassembled one and missed a piece. They look very similar, the biggest difference being from the back. The DA oves have exhust vents while the originals have some round pistony gubbinz. They are pretty interchangable, go for whatever material you like best.

I have a typhoon metal kit. I never completely assembled it before the pladtic DA army came out. so I got plastic bits from a friend. I will check and compare for you. Hold on.....

The metal typhoon launcher: Fits directly into the land speederwhere the door should be. There is more cabling on the pod strut. The metal piece is quite heavy. The rear of the launcher has two round riveted cylinders linked by a piston. The casting is not particularly good, the architecture doesnt make sense either. The underside of the launcher shows the missile ammo feed in crude detail. The missiles themselves are more central and smaller. There is a winged skull on the side. The plastic typhoon launcher: Fits onto a modified land speeder hatch door, there is less support boom showing. It is in three pieces rasther than two. Casting quality is superior. It is about 2mm deeper, but has the same sized facing. The missiles are slightly larger and more openly spaced. The rear has a horizontal louvre vent system. The underside has better detail as there is a gap between the twop main pieces allowing you to see the warheads in the feed. There is no decoration, DA or otherwise on the launcher. All in all I think the plastic launcher is superior, not least because it doesnt unblanace the speeder when on its stand. In addition to the two typhoon launcher booms, the plastic kit comes with modified speeder soors, and both kits come with a targeting HUD for the pilot.

Excellent! You've made my decision for me (it also helps that the plastic bits are cheaper, at least when bought from the War Store). Thanks much for the breakdown.

Of course you know I've replied to your PM, but I just wanted to thank you publicly. It's very generous of you, especially since I didn't even ask for bits in my post. Sometimes gamer goodwill surprises me. On another note, I was also a little surprised that more than one person actually had a Land Speeder Typhoon. I guess those things really do get used!

Ozymandias might not do so, if he collects Ravenwing he will have the parts for several, need them or not.
I have one because I love the model, but it fires 'assault missiles'. While most rocket systems have a low rate of fire and no ammo reloads the typhoon missile launcher is belt fed. So why cant it have decent firepower?

I was referring more to Arstahd and yourself. Yeah, it's really appalling that after a new edition and codex, the Typhoon launcher still sucks as much as it did in 3rd. Surely one whole edition should have been enough for GW to realise that no one was using the damn things! It would be interesting (and more usable) if it were more like the Tau missile pod in terms of stats.

Twin linked missile pod would be beter, but stull not worth 20pts when you see what you can have for 30.
I would go with S5 Ap4 pie plate, no twin linking.
