OK so this week is a bit of Terminator Madness. Just what is needed to bulk up that Apocalyse force! first off is a squad of Chaos Terminators. I painted these guys in a generic/Black Legion color scheme so they could fit in with just about any army. They were fun to paint and i will probably get some more and do some Power specific ones with Icons. Let me hear what power you guys might wanna see! cgi.ebay.com/Chaos-Terminator-Squad-painted-to-a-display-quality_W0QQitemZ270183154628QQihZ017QQcategoryZ44118QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Next is some Blood Angels Terminators with the Forgeworld Shoulderpads. These guys are magnetized so you can swap out all the weapon options (except for the missle launcher, it wouldn't magnetize well). cgi.ebay.com/Blood-Angels-Terminators-Forgeworld-pads-magnetized_W0QQitemZ270183158772QQihZ017QQcategoryZ44124QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Both auctions end tuesday night. Keep an eye out for more Terminators (Space Wolves w/Forgeworld!), and Chaos Marine goodness!

Because you are trying to sell these, and because you appear to be attempting to use the modeling forum here as a platform to increase your sale, I won't hold back in my critique.
Some parts of the paint job are nice, I especially like the crisp well-detailed yellow/black pattern on the chainfist of your red termies. The red glow on the first squad's weapons works well too.
Almost everywhere you have applied any kind of metallic color looks horrid; appears as if the metal paint you used was either thick and not washed down, or you applied over five layers... I whole-heartedly suggest that for your future attempts in painting for-ebay products with metallic paint, simply dry-brush it on. It works so much nicer and will give your models a much more professional look.
The bases are nice but look like they could be easily fixed up by a few random layers of ink to drybrush.
Did you ink your cloth parts? The recesses are way too dark; they'd look much better without that stark transition.
Good job on the skulls in the first squad btw.

Well, thanks for not holding back, Mr. Bomb. lol
Well it may be the pics but the metal areas have two highlights and a wash. I'm not sure what parts look so horrid though. You can see each rivit on the chaos termies and the creases between pieces. The gold on the BA temies wouldn't photo well because it is shiny. I still think it turned out well even in the pics. As far as the bases go, do you mean some diferent colors of inks applied to random areas?

As far as the bases go, I mean bring them up a notch brighter with a drybrush highlight, and on the second squad of termies, try a greyish ink or something to get rid of that brown you can see popping through from beneath the little rocks. You know what, you're probably right, the pictures are making them look worse than in real life. It's likely the flash or glare from the model to the camera, and that effect is giving it the look of thick, uneven, rough metallic paint. I still think they'd look immensely better if you drybrushed the metallics on instead. Another solution though is to go back in and ink them. An interesting take on this is a dark angels captain that is displayed in this month's White Dwarf (#334) in the Golden Daemon section, I believe it was Gold in Open Competition, the painter went and did some thin green ink washes to gold armor, and it turned out marvelously (and looked like it ought to be pretty simple and quick to accomplish) You should take some more pictures, without flash

Well I wanted the BA bases to be fairly drab, to contrast with the bright red armor. The highlights already go up to Beached Bone from Scoched brown.
Funny you shold mention the GD guy, that's Chris Borer (the Slayer winer this year) and I did close to that on the Chaos Termies. I have a tarnish wash from grens and browns I use over the gold to tone it down like that. Chris just applied way more layers than mine. I thought that extreme of shding would not contrast well with the black armor. Do you think the Chaos metal areas are better than the BA ones? Because the BA ones have regular inks (shiny) and nothing to flatten them out hence the glare in the shots.
I have a professional photo setup and do not use flash photography. Reveal bulbs through a diffusion tent is my lighting source. Still, it handles shiny badly. Did yo ugo to the auction site and see the other pics? They might be better.
Thanks for the feedback BTW. I post on two other forums and get tons of feedback (I am better known there though) and before you it was just me and the crickets chirping in here!

Some of the pictures in your auction do the paintjob more justice; it seems like the gold is the biggest problem. I honestly cant see any sort of wash going on there, but then again it's probably just the difficulty your photography set up has with the shiny paint.
In terms of trying to paint models that will sell well, the biggest problem I see here is how much the shiny bits detract from the rest of the painted areas. Those areas are painted well and clean, with some softer transitions, but appear bland and mediocre when contrasted with the unreal shine of the metallic paint. Of course one solution is to use non-metal paints to achieve metallic appearance like greys etc, but that can take much more effort. And again, it is hard to tell how much of the model is being distorted by the photograph.

I think you did a very nice red, and the green laurels were good. Not too keen on the purity seal parchments, and cloths. The shading on it was crude to say the least. Also the segeants head, has he got an iron gob or what?
The CSM squad was much better.

Nice paintjob, only one thing that bugs me. The barrels!
Taking a pin vice and drilling out the barrels on the weapons would really lift the models!

I think it is funny how yoru chaos terminators seem to prefer to stand ontop of rocks. On all of their bases there is a high ground and a low ground and each one of them has chosen to stand on TOP of the high ground. Tee hee! Silly Chaos! One of these days the greater chaos gods will all let the cat out of the bag and admit that their scourge on reality is no more than an excentric gay-pride parade equiped with as many tassles as possible!

Posted By Orlanth on 11/06/2007 3:13 AM So you have decided they are more Slaanesh than other? Nah, Slaanesh is more Bi, after all, they have women-folk in their armies and dudes with boobs. The other legions don't even bother with women, they are completly excluded. Though probably undedicated/undecided with all their tassles and then Khorne and Tzeentch with their big lofty headdresses and pretty colors. Not so much Nurgle though I spose. They are propbably just a-sexual, more like Orks. But not sure there.

You've obviously posted here because you want positive feedback and expect people to tell you how great these are painted. Whilst I agree with praising peoples work and giving feedback I don't believe in sicophantic posts or giving unhelpful responses. Honest and practical constructive criticism helps all of us push the boundaries further and develop our skills together. Its what makes amazing paint jobs and conversions, sharing and exchanging. 8 pages of "ZMOG that rocks!" won't help you and won't really do your work any justice at all. I've been to warseer pages where the only thing anyone ever posts is "thats great" "lovely job" "your ace". This doesn't help devleop our artistic ideas, our background themes, or anything else. Now to the minis themselves (the CSM Terminators specifically). Tabletop quality, they are fine for everyday gaming and are painted neatly to a good standard. Sell them as part of a whole army or a large group commission and I think it would sell well. Why aren't these display quality in my opinion (for the Chaos Terminators)? Posing, lack of conversions (and I don't mean green stuff, sculpting is only one element), lack of depth of colour, few techniques used. The posing is rather limited and there is no conversion element, no cutting of limbs, pinning or reposing, no component swaps with other items in the range. The metalic areas have very little work. No noticable ink washes to bring out the detail, very little shading, very little highlighting. The gold metalic areas are just basic colours. The eyes - the eyes are again basic flat colours. No gem effects on the glass lenses, no different colours used for shading etc. Just flat red. The black power armour - Again its rather flat, little to no lining, or highlighting. I appreciate that CSM black armour is hard to do, but this doesn't have anything to it to justify above tabletop quality. I think you've done a good job, and like I said they are painted to a good neat tabletop quality, but if you want more from your auction I suggest you put a bit more time into them and include some extra techniques. Your obviously a good painter, but these say "painted them in a day for my next tourny" and not "wow I really want to buy that for my army centre peice".

Glad we have gotten back to bashing the Terminators and not their sexual preferences. lol While your points are well thought out, I think either the pictures don't show it well or you're not looking close enough. Try and get that metallic effect with "just basic colors" there are three colors and two washes there. It's sublte but looks how I intended. Yes the black is just black, but little lines of gray everywhere doesn't really shade/highlight black IMHO. I like the contrast of the even black with the different tones of the brass, and the glow of the reds. They are part of an army that I am selling squad by squad. Yes, these guys aren't my Golden Demon entry but they do look really nice in person. I'm not looking for sycophants, just getting some exposure. Besides, what they sell for is what they are worth, its not like they say "PRO PAINTED!!!" all over the auction, or I started it out at $200. If they don't go for much I will step up the next squad. If people (other than you LOL) like them and they make money, then all the better! Thanks, -K

I've seen some of your other work on 40ko and was pretty impressed, so I'll take your word that these look better in person. Still, the fact is that whether it's the photos or the minis, these are some fairly underwhelming pics, sorry. If they really are up to your usual standard, then you're cheating yourself with these photos. (Literally, since you're eBaying them and would doubtless do better with better photos.)

Thanks, Tegeus! I thought that was you.....really, how many Tegeus's could there be?!
Well I am trying to work on a faster style of painting that still looks good. Maybe it needs some refinement. The pics do look much worse than the actual models (doesn't everybody freakin say that?!) but the models sold for a good price (and got me some good commissions as well!) so I'm happy. I usually post commissioned works on 40KO and those get more painting attention (and compliments!) because they are for a certain customer. The Ebay stuff is presented in a good way and what comes is what it goes for. I take good pics to show what they are getting, maybe the pics are too big, because its hard to not see fault when its 3 times the sixze of the actual models.
I am working on the Chaos squad and Possessed right now so maybe the technique will get better. Not sure if Iwill post them here to get raked over the coals though....LOL
Thanks guys, shows over!
