I'm trying to work out a color scheme for my lizardman army and I was hoping to get some opinions / ideas. I'm pretty satisfied with the colors on my Sauruses but I'm not sure how I feel about my test-run skink. He is based off of the southeastern five-lined skink in that I wanted to do the fade from orange to blue, but on the model I almost feel like it looks.. cartoonish or something. Anyway, here are the pics.

Please excuse the shoddy blending.. I haven't painted in forever and did this quickly.. hopefully any future skinks (if I stick with this general idea) will look a bit better. So basically: Does it look stupid with the whole rainbow thing going on? Should the limbs also have a fade to blue? Or a fade to black on the limbs? Ditch the whole rainbow thing all together? So yeah, any input is appreciated.

the saurus warriors look quite good I would stick with those colours. If you want them as colourful as the lizard you may want to drop the yellow for more orange and add one or two black lines from the head to the tail.

Your blending is actually very nice. As to getting the effect of the real life liz, it might be hard to get that many colors on such a small model to look coherent. It looks good, but you are right that they also seem a bit comical. This might be from the white 'glove' effect. I'm wondering what they might look like with just simple stripes of color like the real life liz instead of the full body effect.

I guess I'll have to look into another test model and give a go at stripes rather than the full model... hubby and I were talking about doing that but were afraid that the stripes would just get lost on such a tiny model as a skink. Also having some issues figuring out where to put some stripes, since those darn scales will be in the way. Perhaps just running down the limbs with a black skin. Well, maybe I can get to that tomorrow ^_^ If I do, I'll post up another pic for comparison.. I don't want them to just like.. be orange like my Sauruses x.x seems too bland, I guess.

The scales do seem to be a small issue you'll have to overcome. I was actually considering the effect they would have on the striping as well. I figured that you could do a thicker striping of color along the side in the larger open spot making the rest of the model a black (again back to the real life lizard). That of course would be a big jump from the current color scheme though, and I'm not sure how far you want to deviate from it.

In a fantasy world, skinks can be any kind of orange you want them to be.

Especially if it looks as cool as that blend right there.

It doesn't look comical to me at all. Perhaps they meant comical in a
sense that it looked comic-bookish or cartoony as opposed to comical
funny ha-ha. Because that's not very ha-ha at all.

And if you painted an army of orange blended white handed lizards....

Brrr.

Well, that took longer than anticipated -- mainly because I have discovered the fact that I suck at painting black skin. It still looks awful, but it was the best I could manage x.x If anyone has any tips on black skin, they'd be very appreciated! Anyway, on to the pictures.




And a quick comparison picture.. also shows one of my Sauruses since I am pretty set on their color scheme and whatever I choose for my skinks will have to match. You may also notice that I added a little more yellow to the rainbow skink so that his hands aren't so white. Good or bad?


Of course, there are more pictures (of different angles) in my gallery of the new skink.

Soooo.. the rainbow skink, or the black skink? Suggested changes? Use neither?

The blending is pretty awesome actually, it's just the shading that could be improved. I agree with GD in that blocks of colour generally work better, but not always. Maybe hilight his head frill too.

I actually like the black one this is a very exotic look. You may want to add some black/midnight blue sprinkels to the green skin on head and chin so it won't look so diffrent from the rest of the body. Another option would be repeating the blending from orange to yellow to white.

I like your first one the best. Probably one of my favorite schemes I've seen on the little boogers. I ran it through "Auto Levels" in Photoshop to get a better look and I think I'd go with the blue on the furthest points of its hands and feet as well. The green on the crest looks out of place, but I'm not sure how I'd do it differently.

if the skin shade from orange to yellow to white to blue, then the green part should be somewhere in those colors. Just orange? starting orange and ending yellow? I dont know.

It a original palette. it will be beautiful and strinking.

Personally, for that particular scheme, I think the green should be left out altogether. The coolness of the blue and white and the warmth of the yellow and orange complement each other nicely. Plus the blue to white to yellow to orange gradation resembles flame.

Red would be good for the frill.

Red does seem like it would be nice. I think I'll take your suggestions and paint over it red and see how that looks. I am partial to the rainbow skink myself (most especially since I think he matches the Saurus models better than the black one does).

You look like you spend a lot of time on your models which is always a good thing to see. Your army looks really colorful. I think it will turn out nicely.
