Hey,

Typing in my username "Playa", and my password resulted in an error message.
Something about passwords having been lost in a migration?

I tried recovering using both listed methods to no avail.
So, I set up this newb account just so I could complain about it. :- \

How do I get my old username account back?

Email webmaster@dakkadakka.com from your old email address (the one that you used to sign up to dakka before) and your old username and yakface will sort you out. The passwords were not lost, they were reset as they were not secure enough (plus it would have added 2 months or more on to the dakka migration thanks to the additional complexities involved)

So, you can still verify my account with my old PW, right?

Because my old PW wasn't "lost", just "reset"?

If you did not see any of the multiple messages in the months before the rerelease warning you to update your email address it is If you do not have access to the old email address for whatever reason then just email webmaster@dakkadakka.com and mention you need to reset the password on your old account. We have a process for getting your old account up again so just email that addy. Verifying using your old password is too much work for us so we use a different method which I wont go into here (just email for help).

So, our old PWs weren't 'secure enough', but a simple email is all that's required to change a PW?

What a crock.

Bye.

Sigh. Is there a reason you won't email me so we can get this all sorted out?

There is no grand conspiracy to screw people over, it was just a technical necessity that required us to reset everyone's passwords. We did our best to give everyone fair warning on how the transition would take place and I've easily helped everyone who emailed me with an issue logging back in.

We managed to perserve all of the usernames, posts, post counts, PMs, etc while switching from one forum software to another forum software. . .that's pretty good! The only real casualty was your password.

So just send me an email and we'll get you back into your old account!

Well to clarify, older passwords were stored in a format that was crackable by brute forcing. I could have copied over the old passwords but I would have had to brute force crack every user in the database which is illegal in the US under the DMCA and in the UK under the data protection act (and it would have taken about 4-6 months of CPU time). The passwords are now stored in a much more secure (no known vulnerabilities) form in the database. To compare with your old password we would need to set up and maintain an offline version of the old dakka site and authentication system or I would have to actually write the brute forcing cracker which is much more effort than one or two users changing their password.
