Hi,

Finally painted my sniper scouts (incidentaly the first models i've ever painted - they're ok cept the faces - will post images later) - gave em the old deathwatch black armor - dark dark green fatigues, and darkgreen camo cloaks and one gunmetal colored arm.

Today I bought a set of Tac. Marines and am using my bits to convert them to a 10man DW squad.

My idea is a totally Ordo Xenos Deathwatch army - yeh yeh I know "oh look ANOTHER black army". I need help with it though.

The gen marines are 20pts - which is heavy, they come with true grit and deepstrike - they can move and fire even with a hvy. bolter (heavy 3 but only 18") or use hellfire bolt and fire once at 36" - i guess thats if you're not moving - or maybe you can move and fire it but at half range... not sure.

Anyhow the list I see is:

1st Squad - 316pts
1x DW Captain - power sword +15 & bolter with inferno bolts +5 = 80pts (ouch!) - but ws5 bs5 s4 t4 i5 a3 ld9 s3
1x Marine - Hvy bolter with suspensor & hellfire bolts +15 = 35pts
1x Marine - Plasma gun +6pts = 26pts
7x Marine - Inferno bolts +5pts ea = 175pts (can reroll to wound)

or I can make em all vets and add an extra attack to each... which would make 10 marines = 406pts (capt not upgraded to vet)

I think though that a vet squad should be ass. / close combat with jumppacks and claws - ea. model would then be 80pts 30vet 30pair claws 20jumppack - ie. 10 marines at over 800points... aaargh

any advice would really help.
thanks

You can't afford to put all the options on a DW squad. They're way too pricey.

Go with the pulse rifle marine version--not for CC, but for shooting. They're not too shabby with kraken bolts...no one likes being shot at 30", esp not by Marines with AP4 weapons.

You might try a amaranth color scheme. It's unusual, and people won't automatically assume your some kind of Chaos worshipper.

Looks better than the usual Deathwatch color schemes.

"pulse rifle" marine???

you mean plasma gun? or am i missing something important? I was also under the impression that only bolters can use the special rounds...

Its the ammo that can reach on to 30".

No way will space marines get to use tau pulse rifles.

I don't believe you can put jumppacks on the DW kill team. Nor can you upgrade assault marines to DW...just veterans, command, and tacticals.

If you want to make a legal deathwatch army, you're going to have to use traits.

You can have you 10 man HQ squad with the Heavy Bolters and special ammo, but the rest of your squads aren't going to have the special ammo. You can use the Trust your Battle Brothers trait and give them True Grit for 3 points a model. You won't be able to teleport them into battle, but you can always drop pod.

Because I can put plasma guns in tactical squads, I always go for 2 HB with Suspensors in my DWKT.

Because I play a lot of MEQ, I don't bother with the Kraken rounds, I like inferno rounds. I find it's much more useful to re-roll to wound than to have 6 extra inches and AP4. Rapid fire is always a 12 inch range. Now, if you know you're going to be playing a lot of 4+ models, the Kraken's definitely the way to go. Deepstrike 10 dwkt within 12 inches of a 4+ unit and it will have 22 ap4 shots to unload on them.

I love my DWKT. I play it in almost every game because it's fluffy and fun, not because it makes its points back (it rarely does).

The trait "trust your battle-brothers" gives you CCW for any model that has true grit (confirmed my GW) and ALL deathwatch get true grit (also confirmed) so you don't need to pay 3 pts for counter-attack. Only tac, vet and command can upgrade to deathwatch. You need your own HQ for you to take a kill-team. Only tac, vet and com squads can have diff ammo, NOT the kill-team. with the m.40 ammo being the only exception. You can have a full team of m.40 members. If they are upgrades (ie not kill-team) they will have any and all upgrades and skill the squad would of had. ie death watch medics. Bikes can use the ammo (ie wargear not squads) and there-for can move and shoot, however the bikes bolters don't count for true grit. Only kill teams can deepstrike not including drop pods. You may only take deathwatch in codex space marine not DA, BA, BT but can be used with ultramarines only because they are in codex space marines. You can take traits and i recommend "trust your battle-brothers" for free CCWs. And No deathwatch with a heavy bolter do not get the ammo from the kill-team one. You need deathwatch shoulder pads on every model but it can be on any side. Sorry no jumpacks unless its on a IC. I think that covers everything about them...

What do you mean by an amaranth color scheme, Stelek?

Man, I wish there was a real Black Library where I could get a Black Library Card and take out Black Library Books without having to buy them. Of course, late fees would be your soul. But it would be worth it. - InquisitorMack
