Subject: Deathwing / Ravenwing Combos - It's effectiveness and typical builds

As the end of the tunnel is fast approaching on my Ravenwing army. I have had the desire to continue my Dark Angels collecting by expanding into a Pure Deathwing army. But I figured that an intern army list would be the Deathwing / Ravenwing Combo.
So I ask the question, has anybody tried this? How effective has it been? And what are the best Ravenwing to Deathwing Ratio?

If you are going Dw heavy than use min squads of bikes.
Keep them bare bones with maybe one melta gun.
2 squads with 2 attack bikes are enough to bring down 2 squads of Dw. This gives you 4 units for hommering.
The Dw squads need to be kept close together.
I find that 3 squads with an IC in 2 of the squads is fine.

The problem with a deathraven army is that evenly balanced it is far to weak to be effective. most players opt to go heavily to one side or the other.
In my many attempts to reconcile my old pure DW and RW with the new codex i found that while an even balance didn't work so well, going heavily mechanised either via venerable dreads, speeders or even land raiders was a big help to the force.
This perspective may not work well with other peoples play styles but i found them to be the strengths to play to, especially in the curent incarnation of DW.

Deathwing really lack punch without that second assault cannon. If someone figures out the magic combo please post your list.

I did. I think it's magical anyway. lol
In a few days/weeks/months, I'll have it put together and give it a whirl.

Going mechanised is the only way i see them working now. wether you go with shooty or assaulty terminator squads or a mix, your right. they just don't have enough base firepower on thier own to be all that effective with 5 man squads of termies with 1 heavy weapon.
The list that has worked well for me is this-
Pure deathwing
HQ
belial with sword of secrets and storm bolter
TROOP
-1.X5 man terminator squad TLLC X4, TH/ SS X1,
cyclone X1, apothercary, DW standard bearer
-2.X5 man terminator squad TLLC X4, TH/ SS X1, cyclone X1
ELITE
-3X venerable dreadnaught, assault cannon, DCCW/heavy flamer.
extra armor, smoke, light, drop pod
HEAVY SUPPORT
-land raider crusader, pintle mounted storm bolter,
extra armor, light, smoke
-land raider, extra armor, smoke, light, pintle mounted storm bolter
points-1845
p.s.
Stelek thats not a pure DW list which is what i understood him to be looking for, not a bad list though

Well, you aren't running a pure DW list either. =p
Pure DW was moved to the 'we suck' section at the 40K library, feel free to check it out anytime. lol
DW/RW are ok, but the bikes don't really do a whole lot and the termies are slow. Makes for a frustrating list.
If you've really got to do a Pure DW list, try 40 Terminators with a mixture of AC and Cyclone ML; set them up on the table and walk across. Drop 1 squad if you think it will do something, otherwise don't drop any.
Yes, it goes against the conventional wisdom, but...it's hard to crack 40 terminators for alot of armies.

Uh yes i am.
Pure deathwing is made up of only 3 units types
.terminators
.dreadnaughts
.land raiders

Except that slight problem of not being able to fit that many termies in a standard 1,850 or 1,750 list. and with the 5 man squad limit they are easy to take out piecemeal now.

Sorry, official DW has been reduced to Belial and Terminators. Everything else is...fluff.
Sure you can run that many. Oh I don't know about easy to take out...

Well if you go by the new dex there is no deathwing army at all anymore the are just an attachment to a battle company force that can operate independantly.
The reality is since thier inception way back over a decade ago deathwing as in pure deathing played by us purist is made up of terminators dreads and land raiders and only so.
When it comes to lots of termies even at 1850 with no upgrades other than an assault cannon in each squad and belial your never going to be able to get 40 terminators on the table. and yes with the 5 man squad limit they die far to easily because they can be isolated and whiped out quite easily. i tried the 30 terminator deathwing with the new dex and it doesn't work in the game environment i am in. i never won a game with it (in fact i was usually done by turn 4) against anybody because i didn't have enough concentraited firepower, unit survivability or safe transport options. which is why i nixed all the terminators and went heavy on venerable dreads.
las guns kill terminators in droves, a las cannon might kill a venerable dread (but don't count on it) but there are something like 10 times less weapons that can hurt a dread in most armies than what can hurt a terminator. if you make them roll lots of saves, they will roll lots of 1s.

My wife has had some success with them in a local campaign where you can tool your list for each game.
I suspect that she would have less success in building an all comers list, but she's proven to have a fairly successful list, and has been more successful than people expect her to be.
Her best builds have ended up with either Belial or Sammael (land speeder only), three squads of terminators or RW bikers (whichever is moved to troops), two squads of RW bikers or terminators (whichever is not moved to troops), generally two MM attack bikes, and a couple of land speeders (usually tornado, occasionally MM only).
If I were to make an all comers list, I would include Sammael on land speeder, two six man squads of RW bikers (one with apothecary) both with meltagun and flamer, one three man squad of RW bikers (meltagun), two attack bikes (MM), two squads of DW (AC, 2x LC), and two tornadoes.
