Having decided to attend the Damocles Gulf Crusade Campaign at GW HQ in Nottingham in May 2008 I need to prepare an army. This has redirected my efforts towards a new army ... The Adeptus Mechanicus, I need to field 2500pts worth at the campaign weekend and therefore have been to get going on the Adeptus Mechanicus

Here are the Work In Progress shots for the first sentinel of six in my recon force. I wanted to create a more Adeptus Mechanicus feeling by using some different components with the traditional chassis.

Firstly I wanted to go with a closed canopy rather than open, so I used the Armageddon variant metal top. I then shaved the viewports off from the front and added two new viewports from the Baneblade kit, to give a more Gothic Arch feel. I also removed the exhaust stacks from the engine section, and used a very nice part of a building from the imperial buildings range which looks like an exhaust with a cap on. I am planning to cut and reposition the cap in a slightly open position. While working on the engine section I added a piece cut from the backplate of a baneblade which has a small circular handle and a readout in a Gothic enclosure.

I then used some Greenstuff to produce the classic Adeptus Mechanicus Cog and skull logo for the forward leftside panel, and removed the winged skull from the door. Lastly I removed the boring two straight ariels that are default with the Armageddon variant and instead added a ring ariel and sprung ariel from the Cadian Vox unit.

The sentinel in the pictures has not had mould lines removed, and is held together by blu-tac. Its an early Work in Progress to see if I am on the right path.

Comment and Critique most welcome ...

I like it, the hoods over the view slits are a subtle but effective little trick to create that "cathedral" style to the model.

Dakka. You need more of it. No exceptions.

What are you talking about? They're Space Marines, which are heroic. They need to be able to do all the heroic stuff. They fight aliens and don't afraid of anything. -Orkeosarus

Very nice work!

Simple and subtle, more than getting your point across...

I look forward to seeing more!

I'm of 2 minds.

First off, if you didn't change a THING and left it exactly as is, it would be absolutely fine.

Period.
No "ifs, ands or buts" about it.

That being said, I do have some suggestions that would make it look better.

First off... it doesn't look overly AM to me. It looks like an Armageddon sentinel with an AM logo.

LOVE the gothic arched slits & the change in the exhaust stacks, BTW.
What I'd suggest is making the AM logo more apparent. I'd make it 3 to 4 times larger and put it DEAD CENTER in the front, kind of angled with the shape of the front of the sentinel.
Failing that, I'd move the logo you have to the front... probably left side (model's left).

I realize it's a sentinel, so it's already 100% mechanical (barring the driver, that is).. but I'd make it even MORE mechanical looking. More wires and cables snaking across the sides, back and /or underside of the sentinel cockpit would add to it tremendously.

Oh... and temove the IG logo from the gun...

I think I'd remove all the rivets, too... to make it just look "different" from the normal sentinel.

One other thing that I think would look REALLY GOOD... Remove the hinges & fill in the crack around the door with greenstuff. If it's Adeptus Mech, the driver is probably permanently hardwired into the Sentinel... There's no need for a door, because he's not GETTING out of it. LOL

Just some thoughts. Hope some of them inspire you.

Eric

Edited: Removed horrible typos because it was late when I wrote that & I was obviously too tired. LOL

I'm in the same boat as MM. He's got some good suggestions in his reply.

The exhaust cap idea is great and should really add some personality to the model. For the record though, exhaust caps like that drive you INSANE in real life...Had one on the first tracked vehicle I drove in the Army...I wanted to rip it off with my bare hands at times...

Love the idea! I'm looking for a project myself - think I may have to have a go at something like this as well!

I agree with what the others have said and I too would look at doing some of the things mentioned if i get around to this though I dont think my modeling skils (or my current bitz box) is up to the standard you are. Great inspiration though! What else would you include in an AM army. Take it it's based on the IG codex?

Will be watching this with interest.....
