im getting tired of playing the gun line especially since i talk all kinds of smack to my mates that play gun line lists. so i decided to work with what i have to try and make a new more mobile list to play. i face a lot of tau and their ilk, and i dont have any land speeders so this is the list i came up with.
here we are with my 1250.

captain w/ powersword, combat sheild, plasma pistol. 100pts
5 termis w/ 2 ac 240pts
10 man tac squad w/ las cannon and plasma rifle, mounted in rhino w/ smoke and extra armor 205+58 pts
5 man tac squad w/ plasma rifle mounted in HB razorback w/ smoke and extra armor 85+78 pts
3 bikes w/ 2 melta rifles 116pts
10 assault marines w/ vet sgt w/ powerfist and 2 plasma pistols 260pts
predator anhillator w/ HB sponsons extra armor and smoke 138pts

what do yall think. the captain tags along with the razorback and i just rush the enemy. i was thinking i could give one of the bikers a power sword and the teleport homer so that i could bring the termis down where i like rather than risking it all by teleporting into battle. the rhino razorback and pred. will just rush up the field and drop their cargo as close to the enemy lines as possible, with the assault marines following in the shadow of the vehicles ready to jump clear and assault when they get into range. any suggestions. i need help with this list cause im gonna play it sometime soon and i want it to do well. please help.

You mentioned playing with what you have... and that I can't help you with. But you also mentioned wanting to do well. I can tell you what I think, and maybe if it requires spending money it can be a holiday gift.

I really wished that mechanized marine lists were viable. I really do. Depending on the power level of your local area gaming, they might be passable. But in almost all semi-competitive games, the 4th edition transport rules will just roast you.

Lets go through the list.

Captain... thats fine. A librarian would be your best bet. Chaplain would be better as well if you planned to keep your assault marines. But if passing leadership is important to you then he is a decent buy.

Termies... doesn't get any sweeter

10 man tac squad... almost got it. step 1 drop the lascannon, step 2 drop the rhino, step three get a drop pod might want to buy a teleport homer on them.. you never know where you'll want it.

5 man tac squad maybe you can get a couple guys from the 10 man squad and find points to make them 2 x 8 man squads. Drop the razorback.

3 bikes 2 meltas... I would probably prefer plasma guns on these guys, but I don't hate meltas. Ideally, these would be a landspeeder tornado. but it sounds like you knew that.

assault marines.. good against some matchups bad against others... if you are looking to kill infantry, go with a whirlwind (i know you mentioned staying away from "gunline") though. If you want to get stuck in up close, and had some money to spend try a venerable dread in a drop pod. thats always fun

pred... you can drop the extra armor if you want. Its not as essential to be constantly mobile as it would be on a transport. I don't hate extra armor though. Sometimes being able to move 12" after a stunned result can be the difference in claiming an objective or getting a game winning tank-shock. Some people hate predators... A well played pred is a valuable tool. A poorly played pred is about the worst thing you could field. Make sure your expectations match its abilities.

If I were you.. I would do

marine "mechanized"

librarian termie armor fear of darkness
termie command squad 2x assault cannons

venerable dread extra armor drop pod

2x10 man marines plasma gun vet sarge pfist tele homer drop pods

tornado

tornado

pred

no time to check what that points out to... but it might be in the same neighborhood. It might be too cheesy for your group. It might be too much of a hassle for you, since it calls for too many models that you didn't mention owning.

I don't wanna be the guy that says 'rhinos and razorbacks suck, end of story' But I wouldn't feel right if I didn't at least try to steer you away from some pretty underwhelming choices imo.

good hunting...

Where ever I am...

Im wondering why people are against Razorbacks and Rhinos. I looked at this quick list, and Iv thought about doing a list like this before...but with alot more infantry..its just my style. Any way, drop pods are nice, yes Ill give you that, and they are probably cheaper too. But when you need quick movement, diversions to help other units move, and cover and concealment from enemy fire, a rhino and a razorback can easily do just that. I think people are starting to forget the beauty of those beasts. 5-6 man Tac-squads put into a razorback are a very good choice in my book. Not only A: is that razorback filling in the rest of the points as it would if you had a 10 man tac-squad and no razorback, but its giving you fast movement across the field to take strategic points. The TLHB or TLLC is the tool thats going to give you covering fire when your exiting and inserting to your objective site, and covering your butt when they walk right into LOS of something destructive. Dont get me wrong, DP are good, I wont take that away, but like I said before, I think people are starting to forget the beauty of the beasts.

When was it cool to not be a Marine?

People are against Razorbacks and Rhinos because *most* armies today can put 3-4 Razorbacks/Rhinos down and out on turn 1...that's "bad".

Stelek, a man can field 1000 peasants to a 1000 knights and arise victorious. Victory is the result of the ingenuity, and tactics you use, not just the men that fight the battle.

Indeed.

When you bring the rhinos and lose 1st turn, and they all get popped...where's the "tactics" in that?

Either bring 8+ Rhino/Razorbacks and say 'damn the torpedos, full steam ahead' or don't bring any.

I'd rather have 2 more Chaos Smurfs than 1 'basic' Rhino.

Helps me lead my peasants to victory. Or is it knights? Bah I can never keep this stuff straight.

Well, understand this, 40k isnt just about fielding a meat clever to the opponents hamburger patty... if you field a termi heavy army and win...wow..suprised everyone..not really. Its a different feeling when you put your mind to things, and win in ways alot of people dont attempt. This game is fun yes, but its just like Halo, it got old when 9 year olds starting using the battle rifle and plasma pristol combo and spawn killing.

Halo was boring the minute it came out. Spawn killing is nothing new, I guess...play the adult PC games where it's not allowed and you get banned from servers?

By the way, I do know 40K isn't all about my rock vs your scissors...if people didn't ask for help, I wouldn't offer it.

I offer it so there's more competition out there.

Well, the same as you, I offered help, now which ever way sennacherib goes with his army, depends on his style of play and state of mind. So...cheerio...good debate.
