So, I picked up wodges (30+) of the old Chaos Terminators last year, and tried to get maximum combibolters (since Reapers + combibolters was the optimal build in the old codex). I had thoughts of doing PlagueWing and Lustwing armies.

Of course, with the new codex, I need to convert all my combibolters to combiplasma. Luckily, I haven't actually gotten around to painting any them yet. Ideally, I'd carve off / dremel down the rightmost bolter barrel and replace with a suitably Chaotic plas-something (to be congruent with the extant metal combimeltas and combiflamers).

What is the best bit to use for the conversion? I'm thinking Chaos Plas-pistol since they're less than 1/4 of the price of Chaos Plasmaguns at BWbitz/Warstore. But has anyone tried the conversion on the previous edition metal terminator combibolters? I'd hate to order a whack of them to find there's some obvious problem (too short/too wide/too narrow etc.)

And to forestall the inevitable: Yes, I could just get one of each, try it myself, and see. Trust me, it's far less effort to post here first. I'm sure many dakkaites have already started converting old chaos terminators for the new dex, and wouldn't mind sharing their experience.

....right?

I found a pretty good tutorial on making combi plasmas. I printed out but did not book mark it. If you want to send me an email at ulsif1@yahoo.com, I will send you the link as soon as I find it. It was pretty good, and I planned on using it to make the combi plasmas for my termies.

Thanks Ulsif! I just emailed you, but then I googled and found this:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?automodule=blog&blogid=29&

(combiplas conversion is about 2/3 down the page)

It's pretty good, actually. It uses plas-pistols. While it's based on plastic combibolters, there's very little cutting done on the combibolter itself - I should be able to do a good job on the metal ones with a jeweller's saw and a file. I like that the 'bolter' barrel is moved and placed lower down next to the chainsaw/blade, that makes things much easier.

I may cut into the top of the combibolter a bit so as to be able to include the "coil" of the plaspistol too. That's going to involve some more precision than simply sawing off the barrels though...

If you were talking about a different tutorial, please let me know.

Thanks again,

-S

i just used the twin linked bolter arm, and shaved the Right barrel off and attached a slightly trimmed Obliterator pewter Plasma bit on the end. It turned out pretty good, and required no extra purchases. (heh mainly cause I play Iron Warriors...)

Here is the link to the finished product (scroll all the way down to the bottom)

Those look really good Kesher!

Sadly, the obliterator weapon sprues are $2.50 each, as opposed to plastic PPs for $0.75 from BWbitz @ the warstore. So unless someone has about 20 extra obliterator plasma bits for trade/sale....

Also, I was assembling the Chaos Terminator Lord and looking at his combi-melta - it's got the full twin barrel bolter, with the melta bit down on the side near the sawblade. I might try to line up the plasma pistols like that, though they're probably too wide.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone,
