I'm sure this has been on here in the past , did a search and nothing turned up. If i were to say shoot out the top hatch of my chimera with a assault weapon? and dropped ramp could i assault out of it like a open top trans DE /Orks etc. because the chimera counts as "open topped"with the hatch open ? or I'm i reaching to far thanks guys

You used to be able to do this with orks and looted rhino's (note I haven't played in a while though). If it's the same situation, a tank with a "popped top" then yes you should be able to do it. It was a questionable move then but I don't think there has been any rule made specifically to disallow it.

Read the rule a little closer in the Chimera's description (on fire points).

".. will count as an opened topped vehicle for the purpose of resolving shooting attacks in the next enemy turn".

So no. It's just a nice little cavaet to make you hurt, you can't use it to your advantage.

The passage at the bottom of page 64 BGB actually just says that enemy attacking the vehicle count it as open-topped. So we get the drawbacks of being open-topped when attacked but not the benefits when we want to disembark.
[edit:] AlexCage already covered this.

I just want to say that the rule about power armored units negating the open-topped aspect of a vehicle is such bunk! If their reasoning is that the vehicle is more vulnerable when the hatch is popped then it should always be as vulnerable. What they're saying is that when a squishy guardsman is in between a rocket and the inner compartment of a vehicle there is no protection but when a marine is in his place there is protection. Great! Makes perfect sense... except that given that reasoning the marine should take the hit! If the crew wearing power armor is what is protecting the vehicle then the crew wearing power armor should be getting hit.

SHHH! As long as Space Marines aren't affected by it, no one will even REMEMBER the rules for open-topped!

In my circle there are so many Space Marine players that the Open-Topped rules are utter alien, for the most part, and the only time they come into play is when it's in regards to their assaulting advantage (Orks and DKOK stuff). No one actually makes people take an extra hit from blast and templates, or add to the damage roll around here. The only person who EVER remembers it (and rarely, I might add) is me. And then it's usually only to the dismay of my poor little sentinels.

But when you volunteer such rules as "Oh hey, your heavy flamer gets to roll again" or "Nope! That's a destroyed result, not immobilized!" against your OWN units, people have a hard time accusing you of cheating anywhere else. Ah, sportsmanship.

Oh sorry [/rant]

Yeah, no, all the disadvantages, none of the advantages. Sorry.

Well to keep with the ridiculous you can always solve that problem by attaching one inquisitor wearing power/termy armor to the squad. If I remember that one correctly it just says something like 'best armor' or something like that not 'majority armor' so if I'm remembering right that one guy will keep the whole vehicle closed topped with the hatches opened.

Have I told you guys that I hate this rule section yet?

You're right, but 10 Stormtroopers + 1 inquisitor Lord in Terminator Armour is still only 12 slots.

Actually, I think it's the other way around. Going out on a limb since I'm checking in from work without a book . . . but I read it not too long ago and I recall that you use the worst armor, not the best. Something along the lines of if any model has an armor save less than 3+ . . .

Sorry not to have a definitive answer there, but thought it was worth mentioning.

you count as open topped if any of them don't have a 2+ or 3+ save.
