I am putting my space marine captain together and I've decided on a powerfist as one of the weapons. I would like to know what firearm goes well with it. I have every space marine gun in the armory except for the bolter/melta. He will be attached to a las/ plas squad. Also what other equipment is useful for space marine captains (I refuse to use the cape)
Thanks.

Power fists are bad on Smurf IC's.
You are I5 for a reason. Go first when you can.
A bolt pistol is a perfectly fine gun.
They aren't 'super shooty' they are 'close combaty'.

Never run plasma on anyone with 1 wound unless he has a 2+ save and BS5.
Look in the army lists section. There are lots and lots of marine army lists to peruse.
Lascannons, heavy bolters, assault cannons are staples of marine armies in my honest opinion.

For an SM Captain, I'd suggest Lightning Claws. This is actually something of a no-brainer for a model you intend to use in combat, and which doesn't have some other option like a Frost Blade, or similar.

The only reason to take a captain is to keep your HQ as cheap as possible. To me, that means a powerweapon, bolt pistol, and frags.
If you want leadership, take a master.
If you want assualt power and the best cost-effectiveness, take a reclusiarch.
If you want lots of useful special abilities and the ability to deny psychic powers, take a epistolary.

Actually, assault power lies with the librarian on a single model basis.
If the Chaplain goes with an assault squad, he's better...assuming he doesn't do so much damage as to mitigate all of your extra hits he grants the assault squad.
Furious charge on the assault squad solves that issue.

So make some. Before the plastic ones came out, I made a set out of Power Fists. The hard part is flipping the thumb to make a right hand into a left.

In my Marine force using the current codex (not the new BA or DA codex) I always fielded my commander with plasma psitol and power weapon and full 10man command squad
This has always worked for me in the past and made a potent additional CC assualt force in my army.
But I haven't managed to see if this works as well with the command squad being cut to 5man in the new codex(BA and DA).
Hope its usefull

When you're fielding your commander with a 10 men strong command squad...how does he ever make it to CC?
I also disagree with your weapon choices, plasma pistol is only good for executing yourself and Clwas are superior to a simple power weapon.
He's also more expensive than a Chaplain.
It might work out for you, but it actually isn't the best option.
PS: Codex BA has no command squad...at least not as a retinue.
PPS: I wouldn't stress myself too much with the question about how full my glass actually, given the fact that it's only water. A glass of wine, beer or whisky btw is always too empty - and that's what I tell you as a realist.

If I'm thinking correctly the BA codex refers to it now as a Honor Guard as opposed to a Command squad and they have made it into a 5man honor guard as opposed to the 10man command squad from the codex. But as I said haven't yet played with the new BA codex yet, as I'm busy play testing my Tau army.
Yes claws are better than power weapons I don't doubt that, but they also more expensive. reason why I chose power weapon and plasma is because I can shoot a powerful weapon just before a charge, I can get +1 attack as I have two CC weapons and obviously power weapon ignores saves. I could upgrade them to claws but then I run the risk of adding even more points onto a single model which is always bad if they don't perform. I find that my setup has a decent and even handed loadout at a fair price.
I myself have never had a problem getting them into CC, I just drop models so that I can afford a Rhino or Razorback if needed. The spare points can be put toward better upgrades or models. I'll admit that i may not be the most sensible CC squad available to Marines to field for the points cost but has worked for me in the past with the loadout of my army and can dish out heavy punishment. With the new Codex's I'll most likely have to rethink my command squad but as I'm happy with the commanders performance I'll keep him with the power weapon and plasma pistol as I like the way it performs.
Best option? There is no true best-ever choice really IMHO. The best option is determined by your army setup and the way you play. The config I use is perfect for the type of army I field but proberly wouldn't work for a different type of army.
Hehe, might have to redo my quote to add that little nugget
