Daemon Hunters Vs. Dark Angels, Combat Patrol, 400 pts.
Hi, I'm new to the board and love to play Warhammer. Not first time trying to get into 40K. This is my first report with my first descent Army, The Daemonhunters. My brother plays Dark Angels and last night I got the itch to start playing. Combat patrol seem the best route to go seeing as we are still short units to play.
The Challenger Dark Angels, Dark only because they put the fires of hell out when they took over.

We're playing Combat Patrol, playing for Victory Points on a 4x4 table top. We roll to set up terrian during which my brother gets creative and uses a plastic wrap sight balancer as a wall. Important to remember that for later. Both of us set our forces up in max range of the 12' deployment area, he uses Infiltrate to get his Marine Scouts in close to my line. I lost deployment but win first turn. I give the Dark Angels honors to go first.
I planned on using the terrian set up to bottleneck his marines at two points with my Stormtroopers and Grey Knights, keeping my Inquisitor just slightly behind them for morale support. (Insert eye roll.)
Turn 1
It wasn't another walk in the park. The gothic ruins were the reason that the Ordo Malleus were here on this derelict world, LV 468. The tarot whispered sinister warnings of this world and the ruins were proof that something had happen there. Inquisitor Odyessuss, dispatched by the Inquisitor Lord herself, examined the buildings with his cybernetic eye. Time had taken its toll and it would be some time before they figured out what serects this world kept.
"Lord Odyessuss, we have signs of movement on northern perimeter." Sergant Lewall said as he jogged over to where the Inquisitor stood. "The observation team said they were space marines."
Odyessuss grunted as he turn away from the ruined wall to the Inquisitoral Stormtrooper veteran. "What heraldry and armor color?"
"Dark Angels, my lord."
Odyessuss knew this day was just went to hell. The most secret chapter of the Space Marines just ironically happen to appear. "Did the observation team make it back yet?"
"No, my lord." Lewall said. "We haven't been able to contact them since their first report."
That answered the question about the marines intentions. It was another secret operation they didn't want people knowing about. Haven't they learned that such practices made them suspect by the Inquisition. They definitely haven't learn not to attack memebers of the Inquisition. Today was a good day as any to teach them a lesson in respect and keeping secrets from their allies.
"Get Brother Joram." Odyessuss ordered.
"With respect my lord, he was the first one I notified."
The inquisitor smiled grimely and stroll across the ancient field. Coming through another stone archway walk the gleaming silver armor of the Grey Knight unit that came with the Inquisitor. As the knights filed outside the sergent railled his squad of stormtroopers. Their quick preperations were timely as the first unit of Dark Angels entered the clearing from the tree line. The meancing skull helmet of the Chaplin glowering at the Inquisitorial force...
In his turn, he breaks the tactical squad into combat units and joins the Chaplin with the second unit. They move directly to the left of the ruins and the wall that the Marine Scouts were hiding next too. The first combat unit moved foward and fired its plasma cannon at my Grey Knights unit. The passes his shrouding check, but dosen't help when the 1 pops up on the die. I thought he was going to lose his best weapon on the table to bad luck, but he makes the armor save.
The Marine Scouts fire their shotguns and Sergents bolt pistol at the Stormtroopers they have LOS on and only manage to drop one.
My turn, I fire half my stormtroopers with LOS at his Marine Scouts, removing one from the field. I advance my PAGK forward and fire their storm bolters into the combat unit with the plasmas cannon. The resulting shower of bolter fire removes two of his marines off the field.
Turn 2
This Chaplin unit continues its attempt to flank me, but the wall is starting to prove to be a problem as it denies him LOS on any of my units. The Marine Scouts continue peppering my Stormtroopers with shotguns and bolt pistol, dropping three more. The plasma gun combat unit opens up on the Grey Knights with bolters and the cannon. The PAGK weather the bolter fire like pro's, but its the damn plasma cannon that messes me up when he kills off THREE Grey Knights with one shot, one failing his partial save. My Justicar must be feeling truely blessed by the Emperor as he and one knight is all that is left of the GK force.
"'We Grey Knights are the Hammmers, we slay the Darkness without fear!'" Brother Joram quoted from the Canticle of Absolution, the Six Hundread and Sixty Six Secret Words. His grey knight force began the second stanza in reply then the world around him flared with white hot light. Just as fast as it arrived it was gone, three bubbling wrecks that use to be Grey Knights smoldering around him.
Joram took a quick moment to take stock in what just happen and look toward the Dark Angel combat unit, muttering, "I'm going to shove the plasma cannon in one of his orifices - sideways."
Being Fearless, they continue the fight as two Grey Knights versus three Dark Angels with their Veteran sergent.
My turn starts with me moving the Stormtroopes parrellel to the wall and opening up on the Scouts. My Inquisitor starts to follow them. The stormtroooper unit opens up with hellguns and grenade launcher, removing two scouts from the field. Down to the Scout Sergent and last two scouts they roll morale and make their LD.
Inquisitor Odyessuss face darkens as Justicar Joram unit gets partially vaporized by the plasma cannon fire. The Dark Angel Chaplin was still out of sight, probably holding back while the scouts and Dark Angel unit weaken their forces. The Marine Scouts were being most disconcerting as there was no way in the Imperium that 'mere' scouts armed with shotguns were going to take on or take out Sergant Lewall stormtroopers.
"Mow them down Sergant. Make them regret joining the Dark Angels!"
Turn 3
By this time my brother relized that he made a tactical error trying to flank me. If the wall had not been up he would have LOS on my stormtroopers and possibly my Inquisitor. As it were, he started to return the OTHER direction with the Chaplin combat unit. The Marine Scout Sergent and scouts fire away at my Stormtroopers, desperation must be getting to them as they drop no one this time. The Plasma Gun combat unit has similar luck, only roll a 2 on the dice for the plasma gun and even attempted to use the flamer on the Justicar as he was barely in range.
I get dirty by moving my Stormtroopers and Grey Knights close enough to move into assault range and fire their weapons. The Grey Knights get no love as their storm bolter fire scores no kills.
I'm new with 4th edition rules so when it came to firing my stormtroopers grenade launcher I thought it scatters. The previous turn I rolled a hit on the scatter dice. This time around the range between me and the Scouts was between four to five inches. My grenade launcher fires on the two scouts and I roll scatter dice. It scatters right back into my Stormtrooper unit, including my grenade launcher and veteran stormtrooper as well. They survive, two other stormtrooprs don't. I manage to cook a scout with the stormtrooper flamer though.
I feel stupid about now and my brother heckles me mercilessly, payback for heckling him about the first turn plasma cannon failure.
Yes, I check the rules for Blast weapons and found out they don't scatter. I won't be handicapping myself like that again.
"Little Ricky get that launcher on those scouts." Roared Seargent Lewall.
"The Emperor guides my shots!" Little Ricky pronouced aiming upwards with the launcher. The angle was too high, almost like he was pointing straight into the air and fires.
"What the fu-!" Lewall couldn't get the rest of the sentence out as the grenade comes back down and impacts into the ground. The resulting blast sends troopers flying off their feet, flying turf mixing with the blood of two shredded troopers.
"Your a dead man Ricky. You hear me; Dead. Man!" Lewall said as he scarmbled back on his feet. Was that the ringing in his ears or did he hear the marine scouts laughing at them.
Finally my assault phase, I move my Stormtrooper into combat; two on the Scout Seargent and the Stormtrooper Vet on a scout. The stormtroopers on the Sergant do nothing against him and he likewise, but the Stormtrooper Veteran drops the scout with his power weapon.
The Grey Knights finally assault the Plasma Cannon unit and take down the marine with the flamer. The Justicar is pitted against the Vet Marine Sergent and the Plasma gunner, making good on his threat and finally dropping him. Both units pile in at the end of close combat as neither break morale.
Turn 4
The Chaplin Combat Unit moves again finally coming out of cover, but have no one to shoot at. We move on to assault phase instead.
Marine Scout Seargent takes out Little Ricky and another stormtrooper with bolt pistol and chainsword. He return gets taken out by the Veteran Stormtrooper, who probably was chopping at Little Ricky and accidently killed the Scout Seargent. The stormtroopers consolidate, getting ready for the Chaplin and his marines.
Dark Angel Seargent manages to prove how tough they are by taking out a Grey Knight, but losing the close combat fight against the Justicar who strikes him down in retalitation.
At the bottem of the 4th round, there are three stormtroopers, one Justicar, and the Inquisitor on the field. The Dark Angels still have their Chaplin and five man combat unit, fortunetely with no special weapons.
My stormtroopers move forward, firing away with Hellguns and making no kills in the process. I move the Justicar towards the Unit, also firing with no success. The Inquistor follows up, firing his plasma pistol and rolls a one. He makes his save though and dosen't lose any wounds.
Odyessuss finally saw his counterpart on this field of battle as the Chaplin led the battle unit back around the wall. He noticed two of the marines were carrying a ornate container. A container no doubt worth risking the wrath of the Inquisition over. The Inquisitor intended to find out, aiming his plasma pistol at the Chaplin going for a head shot.
There was a whine and the pistol grew instantly hot, scroching the heam of his sleeve. It would have been worst for the Inquisitor himself if not for the bionic hand clasped around the pistol. "Dammnit, not again."
Turn 5
Its looking bad for my side and it dosen't get better as the marines and chaplin start blasting away. They manage to drop another stormtrooper for their effort.
Bottem of the round I move everyone closer. Stormtroopers into assault range, Justicar and Inquisitor still short of assault. Their fire their collective weapons scoring one wound off the Chaplin. Here my brother was asking me to concede the fight because I only had four models on the field agianst his combat unit with Chaplin. He made a pretty good case at this point. One veteran stormtrooper and regular stormtrooper, one Justicar, and one Inquisitor I was very iffy about in close combat with marines.
I decided that his Dark Angels needed to truely earn this victory and continued on. Stormtroopers moved into assault, Veteran stormtrooper with a regular marine and the stormtrooper against the Chaplin. The Chaplin swats my stormtrooper but my Vet Stormtrooper drops his marine and makes his LD for morale. The Dark Angel marines pile in on the Seargent with three in base to base contact with him.
Seargent Lewall burst from the ruins with a roar, challenging the Dark Angels Chaplin and his marines. He didn't pause to think about consquences as he cleaved off an arm and sunk the blade into the marine chest cleaving the heart in two. The sergent relizes the skull helmet of the Chaplin was watching him. The Dark Angel Chaplin had the Seargent marked as the skull face stares at him, not even looking as he puts a bolter round through the mask of the stormtrooper daring to attack him. There is a moment of hope as Lewall catches sight of gleaming silver armor as Brother Joram races across the battlefield towards the Chaplins forces, the holy light of the nemisis force weapon glowing more brilliantly then ever before. If he could only continue tying up these marines a moment longer...
Turn 6
The Dark Angels are tied up in combat with the Veteran Stormtrooper. It was more close combat opponents then he handle with two marines and the Chaplin on him and he goes down without giving anything back in return.
I move my Justicar and Inquisitor within assault range and unload on them with their range weapons. Justicar manages to peel off another wound from the Chaplin who fails his armor save while the Inquisitor misses. Then both go into close combat with Inquistior on the normal marines and Justicar going after the Chaplin. The Inquisitor manages to miss everyone with his attacks, but the Justicar puts the killing blow on the Chaplin, even with the invulnerable save that he misses.
"'Masters of all weapons are we, no defence exists against our wrath.'" The Justicar exclaimed as he parried and struck true against the Chaplin. The nemisis weapon cleavs through the force field protecting the Chaplin into the torso and through the body destorying all soft tissue in its wake. The Chaplin wordless fell to the ground, streams of blood dripping down his bone white helmet.
All turns are spent and we settle back to count victory points. Dark Angels have four marines still on the table and I just have the Inquistor and Grey Knight unit way, way, past half strength.
Victory Points:
Dark Angels: 283
Daemonhunters: 205
Total: 78 victory points in favor of the Daemonhunters for a Solid Victory.
The Dark Angels drop the ornate box they carried, settling for firing their bolters as they fled from the field of battle. Odyssessus ducked for cover, done with trying his luck against the space marines for the day. As the marines faded into the forest he came out to stand next to the Grey Knight who stood stocially over the remains of the dead, wiping his sword clean. He inhale deeply, the scent of carnage staining the air. Odyssessus let the breath go looking to the knight with his one good eye.
"If they fought this hard to retrieve this box, they will return in force to get it back from us." Odyssessus commented.
"I welcome them to try, my lord." The Grey Knight said. What more was to be said after that.
One fight down and hopefully many more to come. Helpful comments are always welcome and Merry Christmass to all.
