quick question..... in the stats for 'normal' chaos marines it says they have bolter, bolt pistol, and close combat weapons right..right so does this mean if chaos boys charge since they cannot shoot their bolter(rapid fire) and charge can they shoot the bolt pistol while charging(1 shot)? also if they are armed with a bolt pistol and close combat weapon do they have 2 base attacks(although the stat line says 1) or are they considered to use just one of the 2 hand weapons? just wondering, my wife plays what used to be death guard and she eats me up in close combat-vs- my ultramarines and that is the way we think it plays but your opinions would be appreciated

Yes they can shoot their pistol before charging and yes they get 2 attacks in close combat due to the pistol and ccw.

One of the positives of new chaos and makes them a little more flexible for a basic troop option.

One of the other cool things about them is that the flamer or melta gun equipt guy can fire his weapon and the switch to bolt pistol/ccw in the assault. This will add 2 attacks every round of h2h.

I have modeled my new chaos with some holding bolters and bolt pistols to reflect the new config. I also like having Krak and frag everywere. Nice knowing that you can actually hurt light armor with something besides your hidden fists.

Sorry to resurrect a relatively dead thread, but I figured this would be the best place to pose the question. We came across this exact situation in a casual game over new years (I had subconsciously played my army based around the old either shooty or CC squad setup until a friend was flipping through the pages of the new codex and had a "Didja notice"? moment)

My question is however - Did GW make selecting a dedicated Chaos Assault squad a waste of points?

Now that everyone and his Uncle can fight with an extra attack in CC, anyone who doesn't have the option to also Fire a bolter at a target of opportunity seems to be loosing a lot of potential utility. Why Tool up a squad of Khorne Zerkers when you can nearly double up on Vanilla CSMs and toss the same amount of dice when you get within charge range?

"All right, boyz, 'ere's da plan: Win. An' if we lose, it's your fault... 'cause you didn't follow da plan."

That is the question isn't it. However units like Khorne Bezerkers have other advantages over normal chaos marines which makes them a more viable option some times.

Would like to throw in here, fought a dread bash ork list last Friday and was overjoyed to have free krak on all my CSM! I wasn't able to do much to any of the kans or dreads in my boys' faces, but at least I had the ability to do something besides stand there and get pounded on
