Say my 8 spider riders does a flanking charge on a line of dwarf thunderers in 6x2 formation, after the initial combat is resolved, can my opponent (dwarves) reform where they are facing the charging spider riders? Thanks

D - dwarf
S - spider riders.
It made sense that they could, but we can't find anything in our manuals etc.
Thanks! First time poster.

No. If they WIN, the models may turn in place (so change to a 2 wide, 6 deep formation), as long as doing so doesn’t reduce the number of models in contact. This is described under Free Maneuvers, on page 46. The rulebook actually says you can only do it if it brings MORE models into contact, but since this is physically & mathematically impossible with square bases, they erratta’d it in the FAQ. ( http://us.games-workshop.com/errata/assets/warhammer_v7_faq.pdf)
If they then win AGAIN in a subsequent round, they may Expand Frontage from there.
But if they get flanked and don’t win, they’re stuck.
Flanking is very powerful and very important in Warhammer.

My manual is the small one that comes with Battle of Skull Pass, is it missing some things? Thank you for the info, great to know! We are trying to learn all the rules.
Another question about the same scenario: Does that mean that when you are flanking someone and the flankers keep winning, the ones being flanked cannot even attack back? (ie the two thunderers in this example)
Can a ranged unit being flanked still shoot at some other army? (would think no, but already been wrong!)
Thanks for the errata, printed it out and putting it with my book.

If the flankers keep winning, then the flanked unit can't turn to face the flankers. The 2 thunderers could get to attak back, but only if the spider riders don't cause 2 wounds (which would "kill" the 2 dwarfs in base and so cancel their attaks).
And no, the thunderers can't shoot another target when engaged in the flank
Here's another caveat for you. If you had a thane - or any character - in the front of the flanked dwarf unit, you could swap the character over to touch the flanking unit (he would replace a thunderer, so the end of the unit would be the thane and 1 thunderer) and so contribute his/her attaks in the next round, regardless if the dwarfs win or lose. Saved my butt several times.

Thanks a ton! Is the small rulebook that comes with the Battle for Skull Pass just really lacking or am I missing all that good information? Thanks again mate

You're just missing it. The mini rulebook has all the core rules. In fact, if you buy the big rulebook, you will find that even the page numbers are the same. With the big hardcover, you just get a full-color 'hobby section', several pages of background, and larger, easier-to-read print.

it latches on to the first idea to come along, good or bad; and it takes strenuous effort with a crowbar to make it let go.

Quick addition to what Boss Salvage said- a character in the unit can move over in his own movement phase if he's not already in contact and fighting with another enemy unit.

Does unit hero count as a character in the unit?
edit: Make that unit champion.

Yup. p81, bottom right.
BTW, teemosmb, the section you're looking for is on page 46, under "Free Manoeuvers".

Thanks for that clarification Mannahnin, good point to make.
On the champ, does that mean the champ can scoot over to the side like a hero? What if you moved both a hero and a unit champ to the flank of a unit only 1 rank deep - would the enemy really only be able to allocate attaks against those 2 models, resulting in only the wounds of the champ + hero counting to CR?

Yes, page 81 specifies that the champ can move in the unit. So yes, you could do that with a unit two ranks deep.
