Hey all,

I was wondering if the following Black Templar list would work in 1500pts:

Emperor's Champ

Chaplain

2x6 Man squads, I am thinking about kitting this unit out for Close combat

2xLand Raider Crusader dedicated transports

2xLand raiders for Heavy Support

Thoughts??

Thanks,
Chappy P!

Honestly, I'd say no. It really wouldn't.

At 1500 points, you're sinking over two-thirds of your army into transports.
Granted, they can all claim, if needed... but so what.

The deal is...
You're gonna get shot to heck.

Every available heavy weapon that CAN damage a LR will be aimed at them until they all die. If you play vs. Tank Hunters, it's that much faster.
Once your LR's get blown to heck, you've got a couple minimal units that will die swiftly.

No. This list wouldn't work... Except against an uber-newbie... and even then, you'd be up for a fight.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

This will play a lot like an armored company list.

Which means that you will either win big because your opponent can't handle AV 14, or you will lose big because your opponent can handle AV 14.

There will be no skill required either way. You will know at the beginning of the game who will win.

It may work if the enemy is low on armour piercing weapons.
However, Necrons eventually inflict lots of glancing hits.
Eldar/DE with laser/dark lance can take down LR(C)s without blessed hull quite easily.

Ok How about something along the following lines:

Emperor's Champ either the most expensive or el' Cheapo version

Chaplain with BP

2xLRC's with 10 man CC squads, Marines with BP's and CCW's with PF/Meltagun

then depending on which emperor's champ I go with I could either go with 2 or 3 Predator Annihilator's or maybe go with 2 or 3 vindicator's??

Or I could stick with 2 pred's and pick up 2 cheap landspeeders for either objective grabbing or table quarters??

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chappy P!

It would be fun, until you came up against your first Necron opponent.

I actually saw a list that had 5 LR in 1500 points. Wow, talk about all or nothing.

See pics of my Orks, Tau, Emperor's Children, Necrons, Space Wolves, and Dark Eldar here:

It's intimidating.

It's a big roll of the dice.

Eldar, Dark Eldar, Tyranids, Tau, and Necrons can usually blow it to pieces.

Other armies heavily oriented towards lascannons (Marines, IG) can take it on but don't have the 4+ to glance/pen that the above armies do; but usually have 2x the number of shots at higher BS (or sharpshooters) so it really is a gamble.

That said, you can do very well since most people have no experience playing such a list.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I really wished to go heavily with Land raiders as a form of Marine Armored company, but trying to keep that theme in mind, I sat down with my codex this morning and hammered out the following list:

HQ:
Emperor's Champion - Uphold the honor of the Emperor - 100pts

Reclusiarch - Bolt Pistol, Holy Orb of Antioch, Terminator Honors - 121pts

Troops:
10xSpace Marines, 3xNeophytes - 1xPowerfist, 1xMeltagun - 215pts
- Land Raider Crusader - Blessed Hull, Smoke - 293pts

10xSpace Marines, 3xNeophytes - 1xPowerfist, 1xMeltagun - 215pts
- Land Raider Crusader - Blessed Hull, Smoke - 293pts

Heavy Support:
1xPredator Annihilator - Hvy Bolter Sponsons - 130pts

1xPredator Annihilator - Hvy Bolter Sponsons - 130pts

Total: 1497pts

So how does this look? I dropped the 2 Land raiders and added to the 2 troops trying to max them out as much as possible.

The chappy goes with one group and the champion with the other. I went with the cheapest vow cause cover won't matter due to cruising in the LRC's and then hopefully if all goe well, they should be stuck into CC.

The pred's hang back and act as fire support. The question would be should I keep them with the Hvy Bolter sponsons? If I remember correctly that seems to be the most optimal loadout for them.

So how does this list look now?

Thanks,
Chappy P!

I play a somewhat similar LR blitz list, but I use Chaos Space Marines.

My concern is that without Possession you are going to get a firepower far too rapidly. You don't have a lot of guns while everyone is in the Land Raiders, if they can be stopped by shaken/stunned I don't think you have a chance. They only need to get a glance on a LR to stop it from meaningfully shooting (POTMS notwithstanding) I think your inability to pick heavy weapons out of enemy squads will leave you on the losing end of the attrition war.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Brotherhood of Blood

If they have a Psyker and you have the witch hate thing you could possibly assault first turn if you get first turn. That can be nasty. If you don't get first turn it's bad.

The problem you are running into is points effeciency.

The two HQ's really sap your points totals at 1500 points, and taking land raiders means you are almost halfway through your army points sunk in 4 not-so-effecient units.

Really truly, I'd not do the LRC and bring regular land raiders. Black Templar marine units excel at walking across the board and getting shot at then moving forward. The LRC are fluffy, but just no damn good. You have very little 'get behind him and kill stuff' units like speeders and meltabikers. You're trying too hard to get the LR's into the list, instead of making a more balanced army that can take all comers.

I'd say half my armies would kill this army in 2 turns without serious effort of generalship on my part. Stun the preds, kill the LRs; kill the preds, chop up your marine squads. Wouldn't be pretty. I posted a BT list in the army list forum, might give you some ideas.

@Stelek:

I tried to go el'Cheapo with my HQ, the Champ has the 10pt vow and I tried to go as efficient as possible for the chaplain, well the first list he only had a Bolt pistol and in the second list I beefed him up a bit with Terminator honors and the Holy orb.

I thought about a foot slooger list, but I felt that a good player would lead the army around by the nose with righteous zeal. In my revised list, I beefed up the squads to 13 models, 14 with the HQ's attatched.

Again, I plan on playing the preds in the back field and take out whatever choice targets I can find.

Currently there are not alot of powerful armies where I live. I don't think we have a necron player and I have the only Nidzilla army in town. So I am not sure what to do. I desire the backbone of the army to be based around the 2 Land raiders.

Any other thoughts?? Or am I peeing up a tree?

Thanks,
Chappy P!

Well, if you really want Land Raiders...play 'em. I'd grow the number of models you have so the army can be different in the future. 2 Land Raiders can make people not want to play your army with a more friendly list. 4 is worse.

If you drop the preds and take just 2 land raiders, and flex out your army list a bit with another couple cheap units I think you'd still have LR's but now they'd be your predators; and you could still have friendly games. (LR's, not LRC's)
