Ok, having a bit of time on my hands, i'm converting a load of old plastics and putting together a Tanith army...

I'm trying to keep it as flavoursome as possible, thus steering clear of Las/Plas and running with Missile-launchers and Flamers.. Obviously i'm going to struggle with heavy armour.

My main question is, whilst keeping it "fluffy", how would you think that I can add a competetive edge?

Sentinels/Russ' with lascannons seem to be the best option to me..

Any advice welcome, thanks in advance.

Well, there's always their allied units (the Volscani Cataphracts... who else?).

And what about _lots_ of tread-fethers? Would maxxing out on anti-tank squads with missile lauheers seem unfluffy to you?

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Why are missile launchers more fluffy than lascannons?

All out of witty one-liners.

Because the Tanith First and Only are a light infantry force who excell at stealth and stealth is quite difficult while lugging around a lascannon with a bunch of 50 lb batteries.

Tanith do use melta guns, and your whole army should be infiltrating so if the enemy has a nice armor 14 tank while have your vets run up and pop it with 3 meltas.

My Tanith army has 11 tread fethers in it, infiltrating also lets you get juicy side armor.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

A few melta guns go a long way towards protecting you from tank shock.

You can get by without lascannons. It will limit you somewhat, but lascannons have two major targets: AV14 and 2+ save critters. Plasma can take care of the latter, and MLs in bulk and melta guns can take care of AV 14, especially since there are really only a handful of scary AV14 models to IG (Leman and Land Raider).

IIRC, Mauleed was fiddling with an IG army with all MLs, and no lascannons. You do save a few points with MLs, so you can probably squeeze in an extra squad or two.

BTW: I would run fire support squads with max autocannons before missile launchers. Against anything but AV14, two S7 shots are better.

Hmm, I always saw the ability to lug around 50 lb lascannon batteries was the strength of Light Infantry over Jungle Fighters.

When soldiers think, it's called routing.

Tons of MLs would also help in a 40K that favors lots of troops. If you go fluffy and include lots of Vet units (they are the Ghosts, after all... and the opponent nails your regular troops to keep you from scoring, lots of MLs will help you return the favor.

To also help keep things "fluffy" you could have your tanith boys without the las/plas but have them allied with the dubious elements of the Vitrian Dragoons since they always seem to be alongside each other and they are heavier infantry that would definitely work out fluffwise.
