Dragons, Griffons, Giant Eagles, That Evil Dinosaur thing in the Lizardmen list...
The most obvious thing to me is : avoid. But what about magic items? Someone
once told me what good monster hunting items we had, but it's been a bit
since I've looked at the Wood Elf book.
Any suggestions?

The "soft" stuff without armor you can generally shoot down (especially if you get close with glade guard). Bonus is also that dryads can easily hurt that kind of stuff in melee usually. Regarding the heavy hitters such as greater daemons & dragons things get little different. Versus these it's usually either avoid or throw in somebody with annoyance of netlings to tie the bugger up. If you try to avoid the big guy, wood elves are usually in a good position to guarantee that he doesn't make his points back as the elfs are fast and don't have any expensive units that are particulary vulnerable to big guys. The latter tactic means you have to send either a noble/highborn or a treeman ancient in to fight the guy in a challenge. Getting the treeman ancient to fight opposing monster is generally hard as most opponents will be avoiding it (as the annoyance makes treeman almost unkillable in challenges). Getting alter (or by other means fast) noble/highborn to tie up the opposing monster is far easier, altough you usually have to send in some backup so that the hero doesn't autobreak to fear-outnumber.

Chaoslord has it.
The stuff with poorer saves/toughness can be mauled by our shooting (the Hail of Doom often makes a nice opening salvo or finishing blow), and if necessary, Dryads or other combat units can probably finish it off.
Dragons and Bloodthirsters are avoid and contain; they’re going to kill some stuff. Try to spread out and reduce the damage, while focusing on the rest of his army. A fast character with Annoyance can tie either up, but to do it himself he really needs to be Immune to Psychology so he doesn’t get auto-broken due to Fear and Outnumber if he fails to wound. Adding in a second unit to cancel out the outnumbering and maybe add some extra CR (flank, outnumber, rear, banner + possibly War Banner if you use Wild Riders to do it) is usually a good idea. Against a dragon, you may be able to pick up some points making a suicide run to kill the character (such as with Wardancers using the KB dance).
The Carnosaur is kind of a middle ground. He can be march-blocked and has a limited arc. He’s not quite as durable as a dragon or BT, but pretty touch. He’s also got a special rule that makes it easier for him to kill a Treeman (d3 wounds vs Large Targets IIRC).

Ah, thanks for that. Griffons I'm guessing count as
"soft" (though I'm guessing the rider has a 1+ save).

Griffons are "soft", yes. It's got T5, I think, but little to no save. 2/3 of the shooting hits the mount, so with some dedicated fire (or a good charge from Dryads, Wardancers, or Wild Riders), the mount should die, leaving a M4 or M5 character hoofing it. Much less threatening.

I kind of like the evil dinosaur thing. Don't you get a magic tree cannon or something?

Only if you count Treeman and Treeman Ancient. I haven't
used mine yet, but I hear it's one of those "once you go
Treeman there's no looking back" kind of things.
That makes me sad. I like being able to switch things up.
Edit: Some day I'll post my battle report of that one time
when I tried to "assassinate" the evil dinosaur with lots of
units.

fwiw, I went treeman and have gone back... ish
then again, I'm a bit weird about my characters...
but at 2k and above, I either take the TMA... or no lord choice.
like others have said, fill the big lugs with holes, tie them up with netlings, or let them munch on some bushes.

Treesinging works pretty well to deal with them. You can have your own lord on a dragon too but I find wood elf lords on dragons are less effective then high elf lords on dragons.

correct, by virtue of forest dragons being under-effective for their point cost...
I mean, unless you play against T2, 2+ save enemies a lot.
in which case, go for it!
treesinging is excellent too, I forget about that one when I'm not playing...

as stated above anything tougness 5 or lower give it a good ole fashion hail of doom arrow. ive also found treekin to be highly effective against big nasties with their str 5 and three attacks they can tear a giant apart. now then i'll give you a insatnce my treekin were able to inflict 4 wounds on a dark elf dragon and hold it long enough for my wardancers to get in close enough and charge gave them the dance that gives them killing blow and all was well in the world

Doesn't killing blow only work on man-size models?

Oops my bad. It's only usable against US2 or less. So you'd
have to apply those attacks to the rider and not the dragon.
I'm starting to feel that a charging Wardancer should mostly
use Extra Attacks dance since they're making those attacks
at Str 4 instead of 3.
