Well i have started a CD army for gaks and giggles but i think i would like a supported army as well. and i cant decide on what army to play. It wont be dwarfs are O&G as i will be using any of those models in my CD army instead and i like having a lot of different types of units to paint up. So heres my thoughts and any help in making this decision is greatly appreciated.

High Elves. they are the AOTM so I'm not sure how much i would like them in the future although the models are cool a little too "good guy" i think...

Lizardmen: I like LM or well the models at least i dont have much of a clue on how they play I have a thought on doing some chaos infused lizardmen and converting them up with a nice cthulhu slann leading the way but i think this may be a force for the far future not really something to get and play now (somewhat like my CD methinks)

Ogre Kingdoms:the OK army appeals to me a lot. but I'm wondering if it really can be competitive.

Woodelves: another army that appeals to me but I've never been the biggest fan of elves and well I'm not sure i really want to start now...

Skaven: i would i think like to do a skyre heavy skaven force but the prospect of painting as many models as i would need is daunting to say the least.

i've been thinking about jumping into fantasy as well. the low model count for ogres and high elves seems very appealing for a first army. those armies also bypass rolling for spells, which is an aspect of fantasy i don't really like (elves only do if you take teclis, but locally special characters are pretty standard).

Why does Wood Elves appeal to you?

i would suggest lizardmen if its your first army, very user friendly. the army can cover alot of bases. heavy hitting, skirmish, magic phase owning, whatever. lizardmen were my first army, and i always go back to them.

ogres are a tough army to master. Ld is an issue at time, i play ogres as well, my second army (i have 2). i started them just to paint them. boss salvage and me started a "deathstar" idea behind ogres, totally ignoring the masses and their MSU tactics, i lump my tyrant and slaughtermaster into a unit of stuborn maneaters and go wild, good times.

There ain't nearly enough Salvage in this thread!

Skaven are very fun, but they have a somewhat steep learning curve, and the painting required is, as you say, "daunting".

Go Bretts for the win. Nithing like a wave of rock hard heavy cav to smite those unfortunate to be shorter than thou.

If you don't like elves, I don't see why you should even consider High elves.

If Wood elves appeal to you, but you don't like the 'elves' part, you could make an army theme with the 'wood' part. And play eagle, treeman, treekin, dryad and maybe a bit elves, just for making sure you can actually compete. :p

I like Ogres, they're just hard to play.

Skaven are really, really good, especially skryre, but I'm not going to repeat how everyone says they are indeed hard to pai...goddamnit!

Lizardmen are indeed the most adviced for learning. They have it all! My only problems with it is paying alot for those blisters of which you need between4-8 of each.
