Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

Are they overpriced? They seem expensive to me. Six points extra for the crossbow and 32 points for their champ guy.

Champions are certainly overpriced in fast cav.

Their uses are in the areas of march blocking, hunting war machines, mages, and shooters, fleeing from and redirecting charges, and occasionally adding a surgical flank/rear charge (where the benefit in CR outweighs the possible negatives of wounds they sustain). Champions don't really help with any of that.

Fast Cav in general are incredibly useful, and Dark Riders in particular have long been seen as the most effective of the DE core choices.

I have seen some debate about how often the RXB upgrade is worth it. Most players (IME) seem to take it when they’re only using one or two units. If they field three or more, they often leave it off of some of them to save points.

IF used well, they're great... except against another maneuver army with tons of shooting.

Totally agree with what Mannahin said.

One addition- the musician is always worth it to protect your investment when you... well, protect your investment by fleeing.

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

Dark rides are almost manditory in the dark elf army.
The things they can do are amazing.

Dark Riders are great. M9 Fast Cav can work wonders for obvious reasons. They do, however, evaporate under handgun or crossbow, or even bow fire. Of course, if you're playing smart, they shouldn't get hit much. But against any shooty list, you've got to play conservatively because they are a bit pricey and ultimately T3 with a 5+.

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

They are very good for Fast Cavalry. Can even do a decent charge to the front against weaker units. And of course their speed means they can do all the usual fast cavalry tricks better than most.

I have to say I tend towards not bothering with repeater crossbows on them. I am never a big fan of missile weapons on fast cavalry because it so rarely kills anything. Still it can't hurt to try it out, to see if it suits you

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

They're sweet looking minis but their core choices don't really appeal to me, I think I'll stick with Hordesmachine.

I take it to use their infantry well you have to take advantage of the MV5?

Depends on the overall build. You don't necessarily have to move aggressively, but even in a defensive stance, the extra bit of charge and maneuver distance helps.

The other DE core are okay since the price break in the army book revision. Spears are cheap as elves go. RXB warriors give good support shooting, and if you equip them with shields, can be a nice reserve combat unit to use in combination with something else.

Dark Riders are mostly metal, though, right?

I know it seems silly, but I think about these things a lot. It
makes me sad that the plastic Wood Elf Fast Cav is the
scouting one.

On the other hand, seeing lots of Dark Riders would be
more impressive because they were metal...

There's a good chance they'll be plastic when Dark Elves get redone (probably by this time next year).

Converted WE plastic fast cav look good as stand-in Dark Riders too.
