Fortress of Angband, Thangorodrim

I figured the forum could use something of an updated topic, and I know how much everyone at DD loves LotR

Scenario: Domination - Game ends randomly after one army has been Broken (below 50%) and whoever controls the most objective points (determined by who has the most models on each of the four terrain pieces) wins.

Layout: Typical 6'x4' gaming board, my opponent and I starting on the long edges. In the northwest corner was one control point, a tall stone tower. In the southwest was another control point, a ruined house; same in the northeast corner. In the southeast was a high ruined stone wall, and in between it and the house to the north was a small hill. The center of the board was dominated by two forested areas running length-wise with a gap in between them.

Armies/Set-up
We rolled off to see who would get to setup where, and since by opponent won he set up at the stone tower and deployed first:

Dragon
-Tough Hide
-Breath Fire

Ringwraith
-Fell Beast

Uruk-hai Captain
1 Uruk w/ Banner
6 Uruk Scouts w/ bows
10 Uruk-Hai shieldmen/pikemen
2 Uruk Berserkers

Suffice to say it was an odd mix of Evil forces, but he didn't have enough with just one force so I let it slide. The Dragon, Ringwraith and Uruk archers set up along the eastern edge of his deployment zone intending to go for the NE ruin; the rest set up along the southern edge to make for the SW ruin.

Since he chose the NW corner, I set up at the stone wall in the SE:

Thranduil
Legolas
2 Wood Elf Sentinels
1 Wood Elf w/ Banner
16 Wood Elves w/ Elven blades & throwing daggers
16 Wood Elves w/ Elven spears
16 Wood Elves w/ Elven bows

I divided my force roughly into four parts. A Sentinel and three archers were put on the high stone wall to hold it down; at its base was Legolas, a Sentinel and eight other archers to provide volley and direct fire support. The rest of the archers went with Thranduil, the banner and eight or so WE warriors along the norther edge of my deployment zone to go contest the NE ruin. The rest of the warriors were along the western edge to make a dash for the SW ruin. I knew the Dragon was going to be a tough opponent to beat, esp. with the Tough Hide and Breath Fire upgrades, but with his low unit count I was hedging my bets on getting his force Broken, where either the Dragon would run (thanks to its low Courage) or the game would end and I would hold onto at least two objectives to get a draw.

The Game
Turns 1-3: The early game saw the Ringwraith race ahead towards the NE objective, followed behind by the slow-moving Dragon and archers, while the Uruks headed south. Thranduil's group also head towards the NE objective, while Legolas' archers inched closer to get a shot on the Ringwraith and the leaderless warrior group headed towards the SW corner. The Ringwraith tried to cast Black Dart on Legolas and found himself out of range for the spell, but not from the Elven bows. By a stroke of good rolling Legolas scored the only Wound on the Ringwraith, and since my opponent hadn't bought any Fate points for him the Black Rider dissipated into nothing and the Fell Beast ran away back to Mordor. It was quite a victory for me, but the Dragon changed directions and was coming ever closer towards my stone wall.

Turns 4-6: Forced to spread out to avoid the Dragon's fiery breath, Legolas' archers could no longer volley fire and were left with only the beast's armored hide to shoot at. Not even with help from the archers on the stone wall could any of their shots pierce the Dragon's defenses, and with some unusually high Courage rolls it shrugged off the magical songs of the Sentinels. Its first Fire attack killed two of the WE warriors heading for the SW objective, while its second killed Legolas himself.

Meanwhile Thranduil and his archers broke off from their group to engage the Uruk Scouts advancing on the NE objective while the rest continued towards it. Thanks to poor shooting they only killed one, but my opponent, realizing he'd left no one to guard his stone tower, sent a single Scout back to defend it, leaving only four left to try and take the NE. By this time the rest of the Uruks had reached the SW objective and took shelter in the ruined buildings, and the Dragon started moving back towards the NE objective as well.

Turns 7-9: Better shooting from Thranduil's archers killed off the four Scouts for no losses, and they joined up with the rest of their group to secure the NE ruins. Instead of wasting shot on the monster, I sent a two of the archers from Legolas' group to engage the Dragon in combat while the rest followed the Sentinel to join the warriors heading for the SW corner. Those who engaged the Dragon had little hope of defeating it, but as long as they kept it occupied it couldn't use its last Fire shot to kill any more of my men. I detached three more warriors from Thranduil's group to help keep the Dragon busy, left two more at the NE ruin to hold onto it, and sent the rest towards the stone tower.

Down at the SW ruins my warriors were closing in on the Uruks, but they held off while the Sentinel's archers picked off the more dangerous of the models, the Berserkers. The rest of the Uruks hid behind the stone walls and avoided the deadly archery with no way to respond.

Turn 10-12: Turn 10 signaled the beginning of the end, as the enemy's force was now officially Broken and, failing its Courage test, the Dragon ran away. The Uruk-hai Captain, trying to call a Stand Fast and keep the rest of his force from running, failed his own Courage test too, and ran off the field along with a few of his fellows. Thranduil picked off the last Uruk Scout and sent two warriors to secure the Stone Tower while everyone else piled into the SW ruins. The Elven warriors finally charged into the Uruks, killing a few with their throwing daggers but losing some to the Uruks' attacks. Those Uruks that weren't killed in the fighting ran away from failed Courage tests, until finally the last two Uruk-hai ran away at the beginning of Turn 12. The game ended with a Major Victory for Mirkwood, which controlled all four objective points and lost only Legolas and a handful of Elves compared to the total rout of the Evil army.

Cool battle report, but would the dragon have been better off with fly and breath fire, that way you could nab objectives and still cause large damage.
